Show Notes

James Bond returns to the video game world after more than 10 years (not counting that Cyper 007 mobile game), and The Spy-Fi Guys are back to take a look at the first announcement trailer! The guys discuss the look of the game, the new Bond actor, and what they hope for from the game. Whether or not they will actually have the time or right game systems to play the game is another question altogether.

[00:00:00] Speaker A: Bond is a bullet without a target. Let's give him one. We are the Spy Fi guys and this is 007 first light trailer reaction. Welcome to the Spy Fi guys. [00:00:17] Speaker B: So I apologize to the universe for that. [00:00:19] Speaker A: Yes. [00:00:20] Speaker C: Wow. [00:00:21] Speaker B: Justice for Dennis M. Is it though? I laughed and then I hated myself for laug. [00:00:35] Speaker A: Welcome to Spy 5 Guys, where we cover spy facts, spy fiction and everything in between. I'm Christian. [00:00:40] Speaker B: And I'm Zach. [00:00:41] Speaker A: And yeah. So welcome back. We, we were had a little, little brief hiatus by what, I guess just a month. But we're back and we're here to talk about the newly. Wow. This, this game has been in the makings for about five years. I know they announced it initially as pretty project 007 about five years ago, but we now have a title and we have a first trailer. It's called 007 First Light. This is by IOI Interactive, the studio behind the Hitman games. [00:01:11] Speaker B: Yes, those are pretty well received though I haven't played any of them myself. [00:01:15] Speaker A: Oh, you notice? Okay, interesting. [00:01:16] Speaker B: All right, well, I played like the old one and I immediately gave up when I discovered it was a puzzle game, not an action game. [00:01:24] Speaker A: Oh, interesting. [00:01:25] Speaker B: I didn't have the patience for it at the time until I figured out who's got that kind of time. So I noticed that. This is a PS5. Is it only PS5? [00:01:34] Speaker A: No. So the trailer, I think depending on which version of the trailer you watched, some of them just say PS5, some others say it just depends on which one you want. So this is coming out for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows and Xbox Series XS in 2026. [00:01:53] Speaker B: Cool. [00:01:53] Speaker A: So we watched the trailer and we can go through a very brief, like it's a very quick three minute trailer. I'll just run through briefly what, you know, you see sort of the flashbacks of the climbing accident killed his parents. We're told that he's like been out in and out of boarding schools and the Navy. There's some sort of incident in Iceland that happened. And then we get our intro to our new Bond, who's very young, he's like in his 20s probably. [00:02:16] Speaker B: It's just like, oh, prequel, come on. [00:02:21] Speaker A: It's not a prequel. It's a reboot. It's a reboot. [00:02:24] Speaker B: Okay, fair enough. [00:02:25] Speaker A: Like, I appreciate that they're like, they want to start from the beginning and just like, all right, they're not tied to any one James Bond actor or, or like era. It's like, no, we want to do our own brand new things. We can do our own spin on it. [00:02:38] Speaker B: So yeah, I really shouldn't be too critical of the reboot because Casino Royale was a reboot too, where it was supposedly Bond's first mission. But he didn't come off as like a brash 20 year old rookie. [00:02:52] Speaker A: Well, no, he was. Daniel Craig was 38 when that was filmed, which is exactly my age now. [00:02:59] Speaker B: So there you go. [00:03:01] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:03:02] Speaker B: But this trailer definitely comes off as James Bond. As one step removed from James Bond Jr. Yeah. [00:03:10] Speaker A: So we go into our MI6. Well, actually, let me go back to Bond quickly. There's one detail I appreciate and that's that he has a scar on his right cheek. Yeah. Which is a. Which is a nod to the novels where that is prominent feature. Now. None of the actors that we've ever had for James Bond have actually had that scar. I like that they threw it in from here. [00:03:34] Speaker B: That is nice. I'm actually looking at the still of him with the gun and the leather jacket. [00:03:39] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:03:40] Speaker B: Why not a tuxedo? He's James Bond. [00:03:43] Speaker A: Because I think. And this is going to. This like this is following probably some of the same beats as Casino Royale. They're not gonna. You're not gonna see him fully suited and booted until it's like a big moment. [00:03:52] Speaker B: Okay, there you go. But it does look like Jack Ryan. He looks like Jack Ryan. [00:03:59] Speaker A: See, I've heard Tom Cruise. Some people have said it looks like Tom Cruise. [00:04:02] Speaker B: Well, yeah, Tom Cruise. I also thought of Jason Bourne. [00:04:07] Speaker A: Oh, just because he's not suited and booted or just. [00:04:12] Speaker B: He looks like a generic white male protagonist of a video game. [00:04:16] Speaker A: Fair enough. All right, fair enough. Well, talking about that. So this is actually. It's not confirmed, but it's very like a lot of people on the Internet suspect that this is actor Patrick Gibson who did like probably the facial scanning and then voice acting and maybe some mocap for this role. I think he is in like one of the Dexter, like reboot or not like sequel series or something like that. I don't know the actor, but yeah. So we go into Mi Bun, going to Mi6 for the first time. We meet a young money penny and Q. There's watch gadgets. We will have gadgets in this, in this game. That's fine. [00:04:50] Speaker B: Let's see how much they really use them. Have you played the Uncharted Games? [00:04:53] Speaker A: I have not actually. [00:04:55] Speaker B: So this reminded me. This trailer reminded me of. [00:04:58] Speaker A: I've heard that. I've heard that they are good. [00:05:01] Speaker B: Yeah, I think they're. They're good, but they, they have they're also a bit formulaic where you have the stealth sections and then you have the action sections, then you have the vehicle sections and then you have the big set pieces where the hero is like leaping from one exploding truck onto another exploding truck. [00:05:19] Speaker A: Now you've said that you haven't played any of the hit recent Hitman games. I've played through like the first level of the first like you know of the, of like the relaunch of it and they are puzzle games but it's also very much you can choose how you want to do it. If you want to run like. And this is what they've said that this game will be similar. You can be all stealth, stealth or you can run and gun, which is probably what I'd end up doing because I don't have the patience for stealth. [00:05:42] Speaker B: I think that's a really good idea for James Bond, but it's, it blends out. Yeah, yeah, yeah. We'll see how it's executed. I also with James Bond games, do you remember Telltale games and how they made a Batman game? I always thought that would be kind of cool for James Bond maybe. [00:06:01] Speaker A: I mean I got bored with those games because it is a lot of point. It's a point and click adventure basically. That's not really a game, it's a story. [00:06:11] Speaker B: Well, so Christian, as the James Bond connoisseur that we all know that you are, I'm sure I've told you this quote before. I don't remember who said it and I can't find it with a Google search. The quote is video games turned James Bond's suave super spy into a gun totting commando. [00:06:29] Speaker A: Fair enough. Yeah. [00:06:31] Speaker B: I think even if you don't necessarily agree with that quote, I think it is safe to say that the movies have become more similar to Jason Bourne, Mission Impossible and Jack Ryan as time has passed. Certainly it's safe to say we did Dr. No. We did From Russia with Love. Those are not big Bam boom shoot 50 guys with the AK47. [00:06:53] Speaker A: True now, but the way that Bond, like if you made a movie like that now though, would it play to audiences? [00:07:01] Speaker B: Well, but this isn't a movie, it's a video game. [00:07:03] Speaker A: I know, I'm just saying like in terms of following the way that Bond has survived is because he's, you know, he's changed the. Well the character is not really changeable but the franchise and the style is kind of of changeable and you know, flexible that you can have your wacky stuff like Moonraker but then also you have your down to earth, like Casino Royale. So the franchise, I think, is flexible enough that we can do whatever you want for it. Almost. Almost. Whatever you want for it. [00:07:30] Speaker B: Okay. Well, certainly I'd expect him to change with the times, and this game isn't any different from that. [00:07:34] Speaker A: So you can carry on, I would argue. So, I mean, what's the last. The last proper James Bond video game we had was 007 legends, as I've mentioned multiple times. [00:07:45] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:07:45] Speaker A: That is a Call of Duty clone. [00:07:47] Speaker B: Yeah. Which is even less like James Bond. [00:07:50] Speaker A: I'm glad that this has moved forward. It's more in the vein of that. What, the game that you hated? Everything or nothing. [00:07:58] Speaker B: I didn't hate it. I just couldn't play it. [00:08:00] Speaker A: Fair enough. All right. It's third person. It seems like there's options to. Like I said, they've talked about how his option to do stealth versus action and it's not just going to be run and go, like all Call of Duty style action. [00:08:17] Speaker B: Okay. [00:08:17] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:08:18] Speaker B: So it's encouraging in terms of gameplay. Yes. [00:08:22] Speaker A: Yeah. So we have like, you know, a training sequence that kind of reminded me of Kingsman. [00:08:26] Speaker B: Okay. [00:08:27] Speaker A: The first Kingsman. Yeah. We see him be a pit pocket. There's fights. There's something with a chest which reminded me of From Russia with Love. [00:08:35] Speaker B: Yeah, they love doing that. [00:08:36] Speaker A: Yeah. They've got more shooting. Some quips. He's in a nightclub. And then we get a car, The Aston Martin DBS 1969. We get the. On Her Majesty Secret Service theme. There's a cool silhouette fight here. More quips. Scuba. I got excited when he pulled out the sword. [00:08:55] Speaker B: The sword. Yeah. [00:08:57] Speaker A: I love sword fighting. [00:08:58] Speaker B: So there's a lot in this trailer. [00:09:00] Speaker A: There's only a few instances of sword fighting in. In James Bond. So when it happens, I'm excited. And then we get, you know, the. The turn and shoot, which maybe will be turned into the gun barrel. We'll see. And then classic theme, the trail, the title announce of 007, first light, and then a little scene with like, where they're being hung upside down over some alligators or crocs that couldn't tell which one they are. Yeah. [00:09:26] Speaker B: That's a nice throwback to the classic silliness of James Bond has always been there. But, Christian, you've neglected to mention something. Oh, this trailer is a little sexy, which I appreciate. [00:09:37] Speaker A: Oh, yes. I did not mention, you know. Okay. You've got some. Well, yes. And I'm like, there's. Okay, there's one not Only a ton. [00:09:45] Speaker B: But like some. [00:09:46] Speaker A: And it's not like, all right, she's just walking in around in a bikini for no reason. She's by the pool. So it makes sense. But you still have that element of it. Yes. [00:09:54] Speaker B: Well, I mean, I'm just thinking, I'm just thinking of the last James Bond movie where it's. They tone it down a bit. Right. Well actually the last few Anna de Armas, her and James Bond don't get it on. [00:10:09] Speaker A: Right, true. But she's still there for the sexiness factor. [00:10:13] Speaker B: Yeah. So, you know. [00:10:14] Speaker A: Yeah. So I think overall I'm excited for this now. [00:10:18] Speaker B: Are you actually going to be able to play it? [00:10:20] Speaker A: No. [00:10:22] Speaker B: We'll have some great YouTube trailer watch parties. [00:10:25] Speaker A: Probably. [00:10:26] Speaker B: Or not. Trailer. Gameplay. Gameplay trailer. [00:10:28] Speaker A: Yeah, probably would. Or maybe I'll find an excuse to Get Nintendo Switch 2 once the price goes down. [00:10:35] Speaker B: Is it coming for Nintendo Switch too? [00:10:37] Speaker A: It is. It is. Yeah. That might be my best bet because I'm not. I don't know if I can upgrade my computer to be at this level. I don't know. We'll see where the specs come out. Actually, I tried. So right now on the current Hitman game, which is Hitman 3, which they've changed the titles like Hitman World of Assassination, there's a bonus level that's James Bond themed where they actually got Le Chif. [00:11:01] Speaker B: Oh, really? [00:11:02] Speaker A: What's his Mads Mickelson to like redo, like do some new lines and so you have to like you. It's. I forget what they're called but it's like a, like a one off kind of season pass thing where you like play and you're supposed to take out Le Chiff and you have like, you have a bunch of different options. You can beat him in cards, you can try to assassinate him otherwise. But I tried to download it and my current computer downloaded it and should. The spec should be fine and then it just. There's. I just get weird errors when I try to start it. [00:11:33] Speaker B: Yeah, that's the PC life, unfortunately. Anyway, PC is not the master race, as it turns out. [00:11:38] Speaker A: For those, for those who can play it, I would say recommend going out and playing even the, you know, the bonus content that they have out right now. Just because you do get rewards for 007 first lights as the game progresses. Yeah. [00:11:52] Speaker B: And this is. It's not a sponsor, by the way. [00:11:53] Speaker A: This is. We're not sponsored. This is just me saying let me live vicariously through you because I can't play it very good. I Can play the first one, like. Yeah, the first of the new launch and apparently the third one is really good. Like, and it's. I. We'll see if I have. I think I have all three, but I just can't play it. I like bought it as a bundle pack or something anyways, so. Yeah, I'm excited. Are you. Do you think you'd play it to give it a try? [00:12:20] Speaker B: Yeah, I mean if somebody handed me your PS5 and the copy of the game, I would probably play it. [00:12:26] Speaker A: Do you have any of these current systems or. Nope, I don't. Oh, so we're both in the same boat then. Yeah. All right, Watch parties. [00:12:32] Speaker B: I have a decent PC, but I don't know if it would be able to play like the latest. Latest. Latest. [00:12:37] Speaker A: I mean, can you play. Did you try playing the Indiana Jones game? [00:12:41] Speaker B: No, I don't. I'm a patient gamer. I wait for things to become cheaper, which they. [00:12:46] Speaker A: I mean if you. I think it's probably on one of the like game pass or something at this point. [00:12:51] Speaker B: Yeah. So I'll. I'll wait. I would, I would definitely be interested in playing it just the same way I played your gamecube games. [00:13:00] Speaker A: So that's how I'm gonna have to satisfy myself is that I'm not gonna have to finish Everything or Nothing and Bloodstone, which are the last two, like third person shooters for James. For James Bond games. Although we did have. We also had that I think I've mentioned before, like the cipher 007 on Apple Arcade, which I haven't finished yet either. So I just have to finish these games at some point, you know, with children and a family and a dog. Anyways, you know, this is a sort of in little Little Dead Drop episode but we will return very soon with a brand new episode as well. [00:13:37] Speaker B: Which is. [00:13:38] Speaker A: Which will be our coverage of Mission Impossible, the Final Reckoning. It should technically be a dead drop, but I think we're just gonna drop it in as a regular episode because, you know, we're a little behind on this. [00:13:49] Speaker B: Yeah. And we're due for it. [00:13:51] Speaker A: Fits in perfectly with our schedule, so. But thank you all for listening.
