Speaker 0 00:00:20 And today we are back with our rerun summer. We've been covering pilots and specific episodes from various TV shows from days gone by and today we are covering 2000 sevens, Chuck star, Zachary Levy and Yvonne
Speaker 2 00:00:35 Strahovski
Speaker 0 00:00:36 Strahovski and Adam Baldwin.
Speaker 2 00:00:38 And to join us today, to help us with this coverage, we have my wife, Carolyn.
Speaker 3 00:00:43 Hello,
Speaker 0 00:00:44 Welcome back, Carolyn.
Speaker 3 00:00:46 Thank you. It's lovely to be here.
Speaker 2 00:00:48 I'm trying to remember. You didn't watch this. Did you watch this as it aired or you watched it later on?
Speaker 3 00:00:53 Yeah, I watched it later on after it was already fully yet.
Speaker 2 00:00:56 All right. And Zach, have you ever seen Chuck?
Speaker 0 00:00:58 I have never seen it. I was vaguely familiar with it because of people in it. And I know that people, I know that audience members generally like it, but I really came in with no expectations at all.
Speaker 2 00:01:10 Gotcha. So I'm the one who I saw it first run, like when it aired for the first time. And like, as if the whole run was coming out, basically I saw it all. So I was, I was a fan of the show, but why don't we get to it? So we're gonna be covering the pilot episode and another episode from the first season. So Zach, if you wanna start us off with the IMDB plot synopsis for the pilot.
Speaker 0 00:01:34 So the pilot is just named pilot, not Chuck versus something like the rest of them.
Speaker 2 00:01:39 I think retroactively, they called it Chuck versus the intersect.
Speaker 0 00:01:43 Okay. Yeah. The summary is while computer nerd, Chuck is forced to his birthday party, his old roomy at Stanford Des spy stuff, and sends Chuck an email that changes him forever. CIA sends agents to find him. And he has his first date in years.
Speaker 2 00:01:58 <laugh> sounds pretty good. So we start off with what sounds like a secret operation going on. We see like close ups of zippers and flashlights. It's all like film in sort of film war style. But in reality, it's just Chuck and Morgan and his best friend Morgan sneaking out of his own birthday party.
Speaker 0 00:02:17 Why is he sneaking out of his own birthday party? You ask?
Speaker 2 00:02:20 Well, apparently it's because it's, none of his friends are really there. It's all of his sister Ellie's friend. Who's a very successful doctor, so he's trying to sneak out, but she catches both of them and says, Nope, you can't leave your own birthday party.
Speaker 0 00:02:35 Okay. Why does he not have friends at his birthday party?
Speaker 2 00:02:38 Because his sister's trying to set him up with someone so that he will stop being down in the dumps about, uh, Jill.
Speaker 0 00:02:46 No, I understand that, but why doesn't he have friends at his birthday party?
Speaker 3 00:02:50 Yeah, he's been depressed for the last five years. So he, I don't think he has that many friends
Speaker 2 00:02:54 Other than Morgan,
Speaker 0 00:02:55 But he does
Speaker 2 00:02:57 He know,
Speaker 3 00:02:58 And then he is got coworkers, but they're not.
Speaker 2 00:03:00 Yeah. I, I, I would not call Jeff and Lester friends.
Speaker 0 00:03:03 Okay. Well, I'm gonna have a lot to say about this boy. I will hold my fire until
Speaker 2 00:03:08 The moment. All right. All right. So Ellie forces, Chuck back to the party is where we meet her boyfriend or fiance boyfriend at this time. Yeah, I'd say captain awesome. AKA Devon. So Chuck is introduced to all these girls. They started asking all these questions and one of them apparently knew someone who went to Stanford like he did and knew someone named Bryce Larkin.
Speaker 0 00:03:30 Okay. So a couple things here. I like how the women are very well portrayed. Mm-hmm <affirmative> okay. They're not super vapid. Like I've noticed that in TV there's women that people are trying to set our hero up with, they often are like, oh my God, can you believe what she said about the thing they're playing with their phones? So that's not how they're depicted. They really are nice. And they're interested in Chuck and they like, hang on is every word mm-hmm <affirmative>, which leads me to my sort of issue with his characterization. Like, listen, I went in with an open mind. Okay. I really did. But this show reminds me of the big bang theory, which actually came out around.
Speaker 2 00:04:11 I know where
Speaker 0 00:04:12 It came out the same year, 2007 mm-hmm <affirmative> and they both involved depictions of endurance on television. And as a nerd who is not on television, <laugh> this cuts very closely to my heart now.
Speaker 2 00:04:24 Yeah, sure.
Speaker 0 00:04:24 I thought that people have a problem with the depiction of nerds in the big bang theory, but compared to Chuck, they are much more realistic.
Speaker 2 00:04:32 Oh, hell no.
Speaker 0 00:04:34 In the sense that that's the way nerds actually act.
Speaker 2 00:04:37 Ah, no.
Speaker 0 00:04:39 Well, so Chuck in the rest of the episode, and we're talk more about this later is very charming. He's very attractive. He dresses. Well, he has great hair. He's tall. He's in shape.
Speaker 2 00:04:52 I mean, you know, pass off the, in shape one. And I mean, I would say that those apply to me <laugh>
Speaker 0 00:04:58 Yeah. And look at you. You're married with a kid on the way, unlike Chuck
Speaker 2 00:05:02 <laugh>, but there was a time in my life where I was very much like Chuck, I was living at home, I was working at a retail shop. I had a bad breakup and yeah, I very much related to Chuck at that point in my life.
Speaker 0 00:05:17 And if your sister had said, here's a bunch of hot women for you to talk to, how would you have reacted?
Speaker 2 00:05:23 I would've no idea how to react to it.
Speaker 0 00:05:25 <laugh> well, Chuck's reaction is quite interesting where he's fine until they bring up the ex-girlfriend then he goes off the rails. Well, he seems, okay, well, just remember this conversation. Okay. Talk more about it later.
Speaker 3 00:05:39 The problem is that he goes like whatever reference, you know, stand for reference or whatever it reminds him of jail. And he goes straight to talking about his ex. And even if he has all these charming qualities, if all you talk about is your ex they're gonna lose interest real quick. <laugh>
Speaker 0 00:05:55 Well, and that's exactly what happens, right? Mm-hmm <affirmative>
Speaker 2 00:05:57 Mm-hmm
Speaker 3 00:05:58 <affirmative> yeah, that seems realistic. I would, I would say
Speaker 0 00:06:01 There's also a part where he has these bandages on his fingers. Mm-hmm <affirmative> presumably my call of duty for hours and hours and hours. Mm-hmm
Speaker 2 00:06:08 <affirmative>
Speaker 0 00:06:08 And I'm just saying if he were 300 pounds and had a sweatshirt with an anime girl on it, I would've bought more that he was.
Speaker 2 00:06:16 Yeah. Except here's the thing though. The actor, Zachary Levi, as well as Morgan, those, you know, their personas and being on how nerdy they are is pretty much how they are in real life. So that just because he may be tall, unattractive doesn't mean he can't be a nerd.
Speaker 0 00:06:32 Well, just because you're a nerd doesn't mean you can't be charming. Like, look at me for example.
Speaker 2 00:06:36 <laugh> for true.
Speaker 0 00:06:38 Well also Morgan is also closer to the big band guys. Mm-hmm <affirmative> so him, I completely bought as a nerd, especially as height.
Speaker 3 00:06:46 <laugh> that's an interesting perspective, Zach Uhhuh.
Speaker 0 00:06:49 Thank you. That's what I do here.
Speaker 2 00:06:51 Yeah. Like we said, one of the, when the women brings up Bryce and we smash cut to Bryce in like an all white room, I was reminded of the vault from the first mission. Impossible. Mm-hmm <affirmative> the clean room, which has a single computer in it. Just like that room for mission impossible. Except this one's a very old Mac. I'm trying to remember. I don't remember if it, what, uh, specific, uh, model it was.
Speaker 0 00:07:14 Well, this scene is very clearly influenced by the matrix.
Speaker 2 00:07:17 I bit,
Speaker 0 00:07:17 Which in 2007 would still be pretty new.
Speaker 2 00:07:20 Okay. Which part of the matrix.
Speaker 0 00:07:22 So the room reminds me of the scene where they say, we need guns, lots of guns against
Speaker 2 00:07:26 Guns. That's fair.
Speaker 0 00:07:27 And then the old computer, they just use the old computer is alive in the
Speaker 2 00:07:30 Matrix anyway. So Bryce is downloading a file. And then all of a sudden, all these images start ping, projected on the walls. As he's downloading the file. Bryce put on sunglasses before he started downloading the file.
Speaker 0 00:07:42 Also like the matrix they wear sunglasses in the matrix.
Speaker 2 00:07:45 <laugh>. So back at the party, Chuck is telling the story of Jill, his ex, and he kind of starts bumming out all the women mm-hmm <affirmative>. And we find out here that apparently Bryce also got together with Jill. So, you know, stabbed him in the back that way.
Speaker 0 00:08:01 Did he though? This is a very important thing. Okay. I would like to pause on this. All right. So maybe I wasn't paying attention, but the way I read it was Chuck dropped his books or something. She helped him pick, pick it up. Yeah. And then he like followed her home and then Bryce, like no moved in.
Speaker 2 00:08:18 I mean, we have the knowledge of having watched more seasons of it, but there's a large gap in between that, those two parts of the story.
Speaker 0 00:08:27 Okay. My question is, did Chuck and Jill actually date or not? Yeah,
Speaker 2 00:08:32 They did. They did date. They were in a relationship for a while. And then yeah, at some point Chuck Bryce betrayed him and then also Bryce got together with Jill.
Speaker 0 00:08:43 Okay.
Speaker 2 00:08:43 So, well he got, got him kicked out of Stanford too.
Speaker 0 00:08:46 Well, yes. That got a field in the next episode and not explained how though, which is actually good. I like dingling plot threads, dangling plot threads. Yep.
Speaker 2 00:08:56 So we go back to Bryce, he's blowing up the computer. There's a large explosion in the whole room blows up and he fights his way out of, I think we find out that this is, uh, DNI, the direct, uh, the office of director of national intelligence.
Speaker 0 00:09:10 It's the directorate of national
Speaker 2 00:09:12 Director. Thank you.
Speaker 0 00:09:12 It's very important. We'll talk about it more later. So this includes wall running and park core also very popular in 2007.
Speaker 2 00:09:19 His, I mean his fights looked pretty good. They looked energetic and they were easy to be, you know, identified what's going on. Mm-hmm <affirmative> um, yeah, like you said, there's running there's park core. This is where I got did get some like matrix vibes cuz he's like running and jumping across the rooftops, like Trinity, the beginning of the matrix. Yep. And then he, but, and he looks like he's about to get away, but then he gets shot by John Casey played by one Adam Baldwin.
Speaker 0 00:09:47 So I saw Adam Baldwin, a local convention recently. And by recently, I mean like a week ago and he's still scary.
Speaker 2 00:09:54 <laugh>
Speaker 3 00:09:56 Does he look the same?
Speaker 0 00:09:57 He looked Tanner.
Speaker 2 00:09:58 Okay. But
Speaker 0 00:09:59 He gonna look darker. I dunno what that means. He's older or what, but he's still scary.
Speaker 2 00:10:03 Okay.
Speaker 3 00:10:04 He's still in shape.
Speaker 2 00:10:06 <laugh> mm-hmm <affirmative> well, yeah. So as he's dying, Bryce sends an email to Chuck and after the party, Chuck and Ellie are talking, um, not Jill, Ellie points out that, you know, no matter how much they ask, no one really wants to hear about the ex-girlfriend,
Speaker 0 00:10:21 Which you'd think that would've come up at some point, if he's been pining over her for five years, but okay. It's a TV show, whatever mm-hmm <affirmative>
Speaker 3 00:10:29 Yeah, no, that's not the first time that they've talked about that. And I think they make a point of that, that, you know, we have to have this conversation again, please. Don't talk about your exes
Speaker 0 00:10:38 <laugh> yeah. Some awkward exposition
Speaker 2 00:10:41 <laugh> so, I mean, I like the way they did though. Like, you know, you know, I think he even says, well, we've rehearsed enough times. So like it, you know, shows that this is a recurring thing and he just keeps buing out women because he talks about Jill.
Speaker 0 00:10:54 Right.
Speaker 2 00:10:55 So Chuck and Morgan are playing video games in Chuck's room and they see the email from Bryce and to open the email, he has to basically a text based, um, video game called Zork.
Speaker 0 00:11:08 Right.
Speaker 2 00:11:09 So
Speaker 3 00:11:10 He, did he invent it or did he modify it? I wasn't. Cause
Speaker 2 00:11:13 It sounded like line was that he programmed their own version of it on okay. Mm-hmm <affirmative> I don't a ti or something. It was like, it sounds like a one like a graphing calculator, but I don't think so.
Speaker 0 00:11:25 So you know what I appreciate about this? Yeah. And I know about this part specifically, but it's a nice reminder that there are people who look like Matt Bower who are really successful, who are really nice. Everyone likes them and super nerdy. So there are people who can have it all <laugh> which just not you.
Speaker 2 00:11:42 Oh, you go see, I mean, you had a problem with Chuck being a nerd, but you have zero problem with Bryce being a nerd.
Speaker 0 00:11:49 I even fine with Chuck being a nerd. It's just, there's some discontinuities. He's very much a Hollywood nerd. Okay. Mm-hmm <affirmative> kind of like HIL Lauff and the transformer movies.
Speaker 2 00:11:59 Hmm.
Speaker 0 00:12:00 Maybe that's a bad example.
Speaker 2 00:12:02 Yeah. Well I don't think here's the thing. I, I don't think Chuck being a nerd is never portrayed as a negative thing, which I always, I appreciated about the show
Speaker 0 00:12:10 Except that he can't get a date
Speaker 2 00:12:13 That is never attributed to his nerdiness. That's more attributed to his hung. The fact that he's hung up on jail.
Speaker 0 00:12:18 That's true. That's true. That's a good
Speaker 2 00:12:20 Point. As he opens email, he sees a bunch of random images. I'm trying to remember, like I remember it was photos of airplanes, birds, a lot of random stuff. And Chuck watches them all all night when it's like a fast motion of like all of the images together, time, lapse,
Speaker 0 00:12:38 Time lapse, photography,
Speaker 2 00:12:39 Frame lapse.
Speaker 0 00:12:40 And also around here we see that M GE or M G is the executive producer in the director. Mm-hmm <affirmative> he of course did the X files among many other things.
Speaker 2 00:12:50 Yeah. I'm including, uh, the two thousands Charlie's angels movies. Morgan finds him in the morning where he, his brain is sort of fried and Chuck goes to take a shower and he's triggered by something like he hears, like he has a weird reaction to when he hears something about traffic.
Speaker 0 00:13:09 Yeah. And he knows things. He shouldn't know, like the police are in some kind of crazy formation.
Speaker 2 00:13:14 The cops are in a phase deployment. And he was like, what does that mean? So we find that they work at the bio Mo, which is a knockoff of a best buy with screen shirts instead of blue shirts with a nerd herd instead of a geek squad.
Speaker 0 00:13:28 I liked buy more though, because it feels like a corporate satire all off
Speaker 2 00:13:32 The blue.
Speaker 0 00:13:34 I also think it's fun. How they get a company card to take home with them. Mm-hmm
Speaker 2 00:13:38 <affirmative> so I never thought about it, but yeah. Chuck is in charge of the nerd herd and we he's briefing everyone in the nerd herd about the latest virus that has been striking computers. The Irene Deva virus, apparently ire de Mova is a Serbian porn star. And if you go to her website, this, uh, virus will hit it and it'll kill your computer.
Speaker 0 00:13:59 Yeah. I like the use of a prop computer that they could have ready to destroy it. <laugh> just to demonstrate what they're saying. Yeah. But again, Chuck is very comfortable talking to people, including girl employees, everyone likes him, everyone, except for that one guy will talk about him later. So
Speaker 2 00:14:16 I don't see why you're heart being on this
Speaker 0 00:14:18 It's because the nerds I know would not be comfortable with this, with that kind of role, basically. Any kind of talking. Yeah. That's fair. It's like an
Speaker 2 00:14:27 Extreme, I mean, no, actually I'm, I'm gonna fight back harder on this. I know we know a lot of the same nerds and I will say there are some who maybe, you know, may play into that stereotype. There are others who are much very charismatic people who can definitely be in front of the crowd. Hey, look, look at us. We can pee in front of a crowd at awesome con doing a panel. We can do this. It's really not that
Speaker 0 00:14:50 I misheard you. I thought you said, said we can pee in front of a crowd.
Speaker 3 00:14:53 I heard that Christian PI
Speaker 2 00:14:55 <laugh> all right. We can be in front of a crowd. B letter B Bravo.
Speaker 3 00:14:59 That's this whole another level
Speaker 0 00:15:01 <laugh> I think my issue was I was expecting a Flander eyes, character where, because they say he's a endured and he has bandages from playing culture.
Speaker 2 00:15:09 So you're complaining that we have a real person.
Speaker 0 00:15:12 It's more of a balanced character. That's true. Yes. It's not a complain.
Speaker 2 00:15:15 It's something we should have. You would think not just a bad stereotype.
Speaker 0 00:15:20 I was feeling a disconnect and you guys were helping me out.
Speaker 2 00:15:23 All right. All right. So yeah. So as he's briefing the team, he notices something on the TV about a general who's in town and like zones out. And he says, wait, the generals already here, he landed last night. Even though the news report says he's arriving today. Mm-hmm
Speaker 0 00:15:36 <affirmative>.
Speaker 3 00:15:37 How did he know
Speaker 2 00:15:38 Back at the directorate of national intelligence in DC, the NSA director and the CIA director are there with Casey. He finds out that this whole project, the computer and the room is known as the intersect and after nine 11 CA and NSA were told to play nice with each other and all of their Intel went in that, to that computer.
Speaker 0 00:15:59 Wow. What a great decision. It's not like someone can steal it.
Speaker 2 00:16:03 Mm-hmm <affirmative> well, it's supposed to be UNS stealable but of course, anytime you say it's something is that someone's gonna try mm-hmm <affirmative> so Casey says that they picked up a trace on the email in LA. So he's gonna go investigate that.
Speaker 3 00:16:17 I feel like every show has something like that. Like whatever, like crime or police show, there's always like a magic database where they're like, oh, I'm wondering about this thing. And they like type in a few letters and they like have access to like all these, this is very true. The entire world. It seems like I'm like, I'm pretty sure these databases don't usually talk to each other.
Speaker 0 00:16:38 So certainly a mission of possible. They like having those McGuffin, like here's a list of all the agents or here's a list of all our info <laugh>.
Speaker 2 00:16:44 So on we go back to the buy more. There is a blonde woman who's coming into the store. Chuck is distracted on the phone. How Morgan is trying to get his attention by saying Vicky, Vail, Vicky. Vail.
Speaker 3 00:16:56 Is that a real person? I dunno.
Speaker 2 00:16:57 Who is from Batman? Oh
Speaker 0 00:16:59 Yes. It's a reference to one of Batman's lesser. No love interests.
Speaker 2 00:17:02 Excellent. Yeah. Played by Kim Bassinger in the Batman, 19 88, 9 movie. So this is Sarah played by ya Yon STR Hofsky. So she says she needs help with their cell phone. Chuck helps her out fixes the, I think it's the battery issue very easily. And as they're talking and kind of vibing, a man comes in needing extreme help. And so he is helping the man out with like recording his daughter, ballerina, doing her performance on the giant video wall. And he's trying to go back to see Sarah when he stopped by Harry Tang. Who's one of the green shirts, AKA the work, the floor they do in retail, not nerd her stuff.
Speaker 0 00:17:41 Okay. So Chuck is really charming with everybody. Again. He's good with kids. He can talk to this woman who looks like a supermodel. No problem. Yeah. Why hasn't he had a date in five years?
Speaker 2 00:17:54 Because he is hung up on his ex
Speaker 0 00:17:56 Well, that's absurd.
Speaker 2 00:17:58 Oh, okay. This is max.
Speaker 0 00:17:59 This is
Speaker 2 00:17:59 Absurd. Have you ever had a bad breakup?
Speaker 0 00:18:02 Yeah, I have. Didn't take me five years to get over it. I just will talk to people. <laugh>
Speaker 2 00:18:07 Okay. All right. All right. Um, but yeah, so he stopped by Harry Tang, who we find out Harry is his like his bio more nemesis and he's very strict on rules. And he wants to apply for the assistant manager position, which Chuck didn't even know was open and is now considering it. Also, we find that Sarah left his, her number for Chuck and Chuck. He is hesitant to call her Morgan comes back to his place because he needs to use Chuck's computer because Morgan broke his computer, looking up ire Mova,
Speaker 0 00:18:39 Which is pretty funny. That's like an Archer move to use your buddy's computer and then intentionally destroy it.
Speaker 2 00:18:45 I hope that Morgan's not using Chuck's computer to look up their Inova again. I think he's just using it cuz he needs to check his emails and stuff. Right. Anyway. So as they get home, they find a thief stealing Chuck's computer dressed in all black and they have a fight. That's pretty funny. They're both Chuck and Morgan are both pretty inept at fighting. And I think this cause more damage to each other than the assailant. Yeah.
Speaker 0 00:19:11 There's really good. Slap to comedy here. And Morgan goes to battle for his friend. Mm-hmm <affirmative> she's pretty impressive
Speaker 2 00:19:19 Until he says he's not that good. A Fred, I think it's knocked down. <laugh>
Speaker 0 00:19:23 Well, I mean, come on. This is funny though. Yeah. Cause Morgan doesn't come off that. Well, I didn't feel in this first half of the
Speaker 2 00:19:31 Episode, but in the process of the fight, the computer gets broken and the thief leaves in their car and we found that it's actually Sarah.
Speaker 0 00:19:39 Okay. I'm not trying to be difficult. Uh, I landed with an open mind Uhhuh. I'm sorry. I just have a very powerful brand that always is thinking. And my thought here is what
Speaker 2 00:19:51 <laugh>.
Speaker 0 00:19:51 Mm. Okay. It's the middle of the day. Is it when she goes to find him? Yeah. Right. Mm-hmm <affirmative> she leaves your card and then they come home at the end of the day and she's breaking to his house right at that moment. Why did it take her so long?
Speaker 2 00:20:06 I mean, presumably she needed, wanted cover of night. If she's going in at a whole black outfit, if you do that during the middle of the day would look more than a little suspicious,
Speaker 0 00:20:14 But then you're more likely to encounter the person inside,
Speaker 2 00:20:17 Eh,
Speaker 0 00:20:18 Which is exactly what happens. Well, actually in one of my old neighborhoods, they talked about how break-ins were more common during the day because they know people are at work. Obviously this was pre COVID.
Speaker 2 00:20:29 Right? Yeah.
Speaker 0 00:20:30 Whereas if you break in, in the middle of the night, you know, someone's gonna be there.
Speaker 2 00:20:34 Mm oh yeah. Yeah. I mean,
Speaker 0 00:20:35 It's, it's not like where he lives is a secret. Like Sarah would've been able to find it. It's just kind of dome writing that they needed him to be there when she was there. So they had her like cooler heels for five hours or something, waiting for him to get off work and then go ready to do his house.
Speaker 3 00:20:52 She had other things to do. I'm sure.
Speaker 2 00:20:54 Like setting up her apartment and everything else.
Speaker 0 00:20:58 Oh my gosh. As Christian would say, did she though
Speaker 3 00:21:02 She had to go buy a, a ninja outfit. I don't know. <laugh>
Speaker 2 00:21:07 So back at the buy more Jeff and Lester, two of the other nerd hurdles who become much more prominent later in the series are looking at Chuck's computer. They say it's fried. Chuck says he is gonna go to large Martin next door to find, buy some new locks.
Speaker 0 00:21:22 This made me very happy. It's very clearly Costco.
Speaker 2 00:21:25 Yep. Oh yeah.
Speaker 0 00:21:26 They got the hallway signs.
Speaker 2 00:21:29 <laugh>
Speaker 0 00:21:29 Brought little joy to my heart.
Speaker 2 00:21:31 Yep. So as he gets in there, he has another sort of like, you know, zone out. Uh, and when he sees a guy there and which we're just gonna, he, he calls him flashes later on and I'm start calling him, flashes just for seas of, you know, tech, uh, terminology. So he flashes on that guy and there's images. He sees images in his brain of the guy in the large Mart, killing other people, which of course freaks check out. And he starts to think that he's gonna try to kill him, tries to run, but gets trapped by like a bunch of carts that are being pushed away.
Speaker 0 00:22:08 There were forklifts, which is even funnier. There's like seven forklifts, all driving super fast in a row.
Speaker 2 00:22:13 Yeah. And he like goes to find someone for help and was like, he describes the guys like you mean that guy there. And he's, there's very calmly talking to one of the checkout people. And I love this scene here where like, as soon as he like talks to the, um, work, the large smart employee, like all the people suddenly come back out of the aisles. It's not no longer deserted. Now it looks like it just a normal, large Mar or Costco.
Speaker 0 00:22:39 It reminded me of something by like Hitchcock, which is a big praise for this show. And then the guy seems to, but then you see a gun at his belt
Speaker 2 00:22:47 Back at buy more Chucky is at his post. He's got his head down. He's like, I'm losing my mind. And Sarah comes up to him. She reveals that she just moved there and you know, asks, you know, I don't really know anyone here. So maybe you could help you, you know, show me around.
Speaker 0 00:23:02 It's what they call a hard sell.
Speaker 2 00:23:04 Yeah. Morgan very quickly agrees for him, says it schedules wide Oak. So we see Sarah leave, buy more. And we see Casey watching her from a car.
Speaker 0 00:23:14 Yeah. He's coming in. I think someone says the NSA is stepping in and they're sending
Speaker 2 00:23:17 Him. So Chuck goes back home or VOC has a date to Ellie and awesome. We have a montage of both Chuck and Sarah getting ready is a big contrast because like, you know, Sarah is, has putting like we hiding weapons and putting on Bulletproof vest while Chuck is making funny faces in the mirror.
Speaker 0 00:23:35 Also gratuitous underwear shots of Yvonne mm-hmm
Speaker 2 00:23:38 <affirmative>
Speaker 3 00:23:39 Mm-hmm <affirmative>.
Speaker 2 00:23:40 So Ellie gives Chuck some flowers to give to Sarah. And as this is, is happening, Sarah calls her boss who says kill him if he runs.
Speaker 0 00:23:49 Yeah. So a couple things here, like I, should I start bringing flowers on dates? Is that something people do? Cause it seems like something people only do in the movies.
Speaker 2 00:23:57 I've done it
Speaker 0 00:23:58 Just for first
Speaker 3 00:23:59 Dates. It's like an extra nice thing. You don't have to do it, but it's like next level
Speaker 0 00:24:04 Mm-hmm <affirmative> okay. So Morgan is also creepy in this part.
Speaker 2 00:24:08 Oh
Speaker 0 00:24:09 Yeah. That's the note. I
Speaker 2 00:24:10 Next part.
Speaker 0 00:24:11 Okay. So later on they talk about how Morgan is in love with oh yes. Yeah. In this episode it's more but like in lost, like he's really creeping on her.
Speaker 2 00:24:21 Yeah. Yep.
Speaker 3 00:24:23 Well, you could tell that LA doesn't like that <laugh>
Speaker 2 00:24:29 Uh, they go to a Mexican place for their date. Chuck tells Sarah about captain. Awesome. Sarah, you know, reveals that. She's just not funny apparently. And Chuck is she's you know, trying to figure out what's wrong with you, you know, you're attractive, smart and is yes. So apparently just not funny. Yeah.
Speaker 0 00:24:48 And Chuck is so charming. He's so great in this part, she's laughing. He's really connecting with her. They're having a great time and don't tell me she's faking it. Cause later she says that she's so into him. All right. So he's really doing great and I totally am not buying this whole thing. That he's just that,
Speaker 2 00:25:08 Are you jealous?
Speaker 0 00:25:09 Yeah. It's obvious.
Speaker 3 00:25:11 <laugh>
Speaker 0 00:25:12 Yeah. I'll admit it. I don't care.
Speaker 3 00:25:14 He could have been bill gates. I think they say that at one point.
Speaker 2 00:25:17 Oh yeah. That
Speaker 3 00:25:19 He was on a track.
Speaker 0 00:25:20 What? A relatable protagonist.
Speaker 2 00:25:24 Well, it's relatable, but it's also aspirational
Speaker 0 00:25:27 For character. You want them to have scales, but also flies. And he obviously does have flies. That's how you have a relatable
Speaker 2 00:25:32 Character.
Speaker 0 00:25:33 Mm-hmm <affirmative> so it totally works.
Speaker 2 00:25:35 Yeah. Sarah just come, came out of a long relationship and she asked Chuck, you know about you E you know, women in your past. And he says, yes. And he make, uh, and tries not bring up Jill. And then he makes a really a joke that I don't think would work today. The restraining order joke.
Speaker 3 00:25:51 Yeah. That was a little cringe.
Speaker 0 00:25:53 Yeah. I liked it.
Speaker 2 00:25:55 I, I don't think it works today.
Speaker 0 00:25:57 He's the target of the joke. Not her still. That's why it works. I
Speaker 3 00:26:01 But still you don't want from a guy. Yeah.
Speaker 0 00:26:04 You gotta know your audience. That's fair.
Speaker 2 00:26:06 Yeah. So Chuck brings Sarah to a music venue on the way there. He flashes on a motorcade and Casey spots them as their walking tells his agents that Chuck has to be taken alive, but they can kill Sarah. Yep. So inside they're listening to the music, Sarah spots, the NSA agent, and brings Chuck to the dance floor. And she likes, takes out the NSA agents as she's dancing with Chuck, having no idea that that's happening.
Speaker 0 00:26:32 Very sexy. Yeah. Look at this, Chuck. He knows all the cool bars. He knows all the cool bands. He doesn't like any weird music, like Irish,
Speaker 2 00:26:42 Irish music,
Speaker 0 00:26:43 For example.
Speaker 3 00:26:46 Yeah. How does he know this bar scene? Maybe Ellie told him where to go.
Speaker 2 00:26:50 Yeah. That's what I'm feeling like. Uh, it's, it's more than likely that Ellie and awesome. Told him where to take her.
Speaker 0 00:26:56 Yeah. Are we doing fan theories? I like it. I like it.
Speaker 2 00:27:00 Sarah brings him outside and tells Chuck to get in the car. She breaks into the car and hot wires. It, they have a chase with a nerd hurter car going backwards.
Speaker 0 00:27:11 I did like that. He drove his company car on a date to a bar. That is very funny. So I actually wanted to jump in something that we skipped, which is oh yeah, sure. Was the part where she said that her ex was named Bruce. Yep. Which obviously is Bryce mm-hmm <affirmative> with a slight change. And then they talk about his name. Like Chuck makes fun of the name. Bruce. She makes fun of the name. Chuck. Yeah. And that got me thinking, like, why does he go by Chuck? Why doesn't he go by Charles or Charlie?
Speaker 2 00:27:37 Mm. I assume it was like a childhood nickname that he just,
Speaker 3 00:27:40 But his parents called him. Yeah. Yeah.
Speaker 0 00:27:42 So you know how people have names that like, they totally fit. Like you can't imagine them with any other name?
Speaker 2 00:27:48 Sure.
Speaker 0 00:27:49 I do not feel that way about Chuck. He doesn't seem like a Chuck to me.
Speaker 2 00:27:52 Okay. Anyways, so they have this big car chase and uh, I like it. It's the actions here, here is pretty good. Like she's driving the nerd, her to backwards and they drive it backwards down some stairs kind of destroy the car.
Speaker 0 00:28:08 <laugh> yeah. It's a real night and day vibe.
Speaker 2 00:28:11 <laugh>
Speaker 0 00:28:12 I don't remember where the Chuck did and he's screaming, but I feel like he does.
Speaker 2 00:28:15 Uh, yeah, I'm sure. I'm sure he has a few girlish screams. Mm-hmm <affirmative> Sarah tells Chuck that the essay are trying to kill him. And he's the very confused why. Um, and as they're talking about Casey smashes into them with a giant SUV
Speaker 0 00:28:29 Mm-hmm <affirmative> this is good action.
Speaker 2 00:28:31 Mm-hmm <affirmative> they get out of the car. They're trying to get away. And they're about to Ram into Sarah when she crashes their car with the emergency barricades that she activates like near, like from a parking lot.
Speaker 0 00:28:42 So I didn't even look this up for fact versus fiction.
Speaker 2 00:28:45 Oh, there's no way they moved that fast.
Speaker 0 00:28:47 Yeah. Come on.
Speaker 2 00:28:48 <laugh>
Speaker 0 00:28:48 Actually, if this show had a higher budget, they could've had it go slower. Then it like launches the car in the air. Hmm. That would've been cool. <laugh> I feel like that was in some movie, but I don't know which one.
Speaker 2 00:28:58 I'm sure it was Sarah request in the emergency ear, air evac. She asks, uh, Chuck what he knows about Bryce and they're on top of a rooftop. He's surprised to find out that Chuck Bryce was a spy talks about the email and the pictures and that there's no backup. There was no external drive. It was so everything was what he saw. Mm-hmm <affirmative> so Casey gets up there, said Mexican standoff. Sarah tells Chuck not to freak out.
Speaker 0 00:29:26 Yeah. I like that. There was a power struggle between the two agencies here. Mm-hmm <affirmative> that was a cool development.
Speaker 2 00:29:31 So Chuck flashes on, what is he? What is he flash? Oh, the hotel. He like looks over the edge and sees the hotel and all the Intel about, uh, the general stand field flows into his head.
Speaker 0 00:29:46 Mm.
Speaker 2 00:29:47 So he says that, you know, someone's gonna try to kill general stand field. He relays that. Okay. The CI intercepted one part of a plan. I think it was a hotel chromatics and the NSA intercepted the other part, which was like a BA plans for bomb. And Y all got synthesized and put into his head. And so now all of their secrets are in his head.
Speaker 0 00:30:07 Yeah. So I like how that comes back to where the, as the intersect, the intersex origins. But that being said, I felt like if he really knows all that stuff, they should just kill him.
Speaker 2 00:30:18 Yes. But all of the Intel that they had is in him now. And they want all of that Intel.
Speaker 0 00:30:24 No, no, no, no, no. Excuse me. They said the two agencies share their information. There's no backups. There's gotta be
Speaker 2 00:30:32 Apparently that's no, it's all of the, yeah.
Speaker 0 00:30:34 <laugh> they're saying they don't know anything. The only thing they know is in Chuck's head. That's hilarious.
Speaker 2 00:30:40 Yeah. I've never actually thought about it. Whether there's other, like whether or not all of it exists elsewhere or not. I don't know.
Speaker 3 00:30:47 Mm-hmm <affirmative>, I'm sure when they merge the two there's like synergy and you get like a next level.
Speaker 2 00:30:53 Yeah. Like all the stuff like exactly what's going on in Chuck's head where he can synthesize it and combine it to make it actual. Yeah.
Speaker 0 00:31:02 Well the human brain acts as a computer. Yeah. Yeah.
Speaker 3 00:31:05 And, and all the money they spent on the project too.
Speaker 2 00:31:07 It's true. Yeah. That's that's important. All that money.
Speaker 0 00:31:10 All the sun cost.
Speaker 2 00:31:11 Yeah. Yep. So Sarah asks, if there's time to diffuse a bomb, she reveals that Bryce is dead and that he died sending that email.
Speaker 0 00:31:19 Okay. This really confused me. Okay, Sarah, if I don't get it and maybe they explain it later. So Sarah says Bryce died sending those secrets to you. Yeah. But Casey killed him. Yeah. I still don't understand why all these information needed to get out.
Speaker 2 00:31:36 We'll find out later.
Speaker 0 00:31:37 Ugh. I knew you were gonna say that it better be a darn good explanation though.
Speaker 3 00:31:42 <laugh> he'll just have to watch more episodes. Mm-hmm
Speaker 2 00:31:44 <affirmative> they go to try to rescue the general he's already on the stage. The Serbian bomb maker from before, the one who he saw in the large Mart is wheeled out a serving tray with the bomb in it. They find the bomb. There's no time to evacuate and they can't disconnect the computer.
Speaker 0 00:31:59 Yeah. It's a really fancy bomb. Where, where the computer like comes up out of the ground or whatever mm-hmm <affirmative> outta the case. And it has a big digital countdown.
Speaker 2 00:32:11 <laugh>. So as this is going on, he gets a call from Morgan. Who's mentioning the mentions, the IREA Mova virus one, Chuck gets an idea, connects the computer to the internet, looks up IREA Mova gets the virus on the computer, which kills the computer and diffuse the ball.
Speaker 0 00:32:25 Okay. So I'm really not trying to be difficult.
Speaker 2 00:32:28 Hard. You though.
Speaker 0 00:32:29 This part made me roll my eyes so hard. All right. So
Speaker 3 00:32:33 First of all, it's innovative.
Speaker 0 00:32:36 <laugh> yes, it is innovative. Carolyn you're correct. First of all, all, why is the computer even hooked up to the internet? Or he has
Speaker 2 00:32:42 Activate that. That's what he like that's he goes into the dos back door to actually connect it to the,
Speaker 3 00:32:46 Yeah. He said he was familiar with this model of computer. So he was able to do behind the scenes stuff with his nerd herd skills. Mm-hmm
Speaker 2 00:32:52 <affirmative>, that's why he says, you know, Mr. Bomb meet Mr. Internet. So he connects it to the internet.
Speaker 0 00:32:58 All right. I'm gonna skip to the end and said that I found it really. I can't think of the adjective. It just made me roll my eyes that his geek knowledge saves the day. Well, these two top field agents just stand there with their thumbs up their butts, watching him do it. It makes them look really dumb. And the thing is, he's been useful up to this point. Like he shows them where it is. He shows them how to go. So if Sarah had stepped in and disarmed the bomb, I really don't think it would've hurt the show that much. And I know that they need to explain why he sticks around for the rest of the series. I think he's proved his usefulness at this point.
Speaker 3 00:33:33 Yeah. They don't even try and like cut the red wire or anything like that. Do they, they just stand there
Speaker 2 00:33:39 And they make this for why they can't do any of that. They like say they can't distant computer. Can't do this. Can't do that.
Speaker 0 00:33:45 Yeah. One little one liner explanations.
Speaker 3 00:33:49 We're biased. Cuz we like this show. So
Speaker 2 00:33:51 Right.
Speaker 0 00:33:52 That's
Speaker 2 00:33:53 Fair. So Casey and Sarah about who gets Chuck? Casey wants them in lockdown. Sarah wants to be more delicate and Chuck just wants to go home. So he leaves and he spends the whole night, uh, at a beach watching the waters. Sarah approaches him says she's been watching him all night. Chuck is wondering why Bryce chose him and asks what happens now Sarah says for now you go back to your life and they protect him and work with him. And he has to tell his family and friends nothing. So Sarah back at her place is looking at photos of on her phone of her and Bryce. So yes, she and Bryce were in a relationship.
Speaker 0 00:34:31 Oh no love triangle.
Speaker 2 00:34:32 Well is it though? Cause Bryce is dead. <laugh>
Speaker 0 00:34:35 Is he though? Hey, come on.
Speaker 2 00:34:38 So Chuck puts in his application for assistant manager. We get some nice detic music from Morgan. Well what does, what is assumed to be non-GE but turns out to be detic music. Yeah.
Speaker 0 00:34:48 We also get a little bit of physical intimidation and bullying from Harry.
Speaker 2 00:34:51 Yeah. I was like, is it, does the shoulder check really work when you don't hit their shoulder? But you just hit their arm instead. Cause he's hair Ang is much shorter
Speaker 0 00:35:00 Either way. It's like, oh my goodness.
Speaker 2 00:35:02 Yeah. So Chuck is told to train the new guy and it turns out the new guy, the new green shirt is Casey. So he's gotta cover that will keep, let him keep an eye on Chuck mm-hmm <affirmative> and he sees Sarah in the store as well, flashes on her ring and he sees her killing a bunch of people.
Speaker 0 00:35:19 Yeah. Sarah's the killer too. Just in case you thought Casey was the bad guy.
Speaker 2 00:35:23 All right. So did you have any spy fact versus spy fiction?
Speaker 0 00:35:27 Oh, as a matter of fact, I did.
Speaker 2 00:35:28 All right. What do you got?
Speaker 0 00:35:30 So Casey and where the stuff with Bryce took place at the directorate of national intelligence. Now that doesn't seem to be real, but there is a thing Uhhuh called the office of the director of national intelligence and the,
Speaker 2 00:35:42 Which is what I said, isn't it
Speaker 0 00:35:44 <laugh> yeah. <laugh> their website is dni.gov Uhhuh. Basically it says the DNI service is the head of the Intel community. Mm-hmm <affirmative> a coalition of 17 agencies and organizations, including the O D NNI or the office, the director bottle, blah blah. Yeah. It works within the executive branch to independently and collaboratively gather and analyze the Intel necessary to conduct foreign relations and national security activities. So it's kind of like the intersect, but as an agency, not entire,
Speaker 2 00:36:12 As I recall, DNI wasn't formed until after nine 11. Right? So just like in real life, you know, they were told to play nice and combine all their, you know, intelligence,
Speaker 0 00:36:22 According to dni.gov. It was formed after nine 11. And it includes the national counter terrorism center, national counter intelligence and security center and the national counter proliferation center and their hiring. If there's anyone out there who's interested in working
Speaker 2 00:36:37 There. Interesting. All right.
Speaker 0 00:36:39 That's all on DNI. Back of the other thing I had was the idea of NSA having agents.
Speaker 2 00:36:45 Ah, yes. <laugh> I feel like we've talked about before, but we can always go over it again.
Speaker 0 00:36:49 Yeah. So this was in triple X that we talked about it that's
Speaker 2 00:36:52 Right. Yes.
Speaker 0 00:36:53 So according to a clearance jobs.com article called five myths about the national security agency, everyone knows the NSA doesn't have agents, right?
Speaker 2 00:37:02 Mm-hmm <affirmative>
Speaker 0 00:37:03 Well wrong. What? Yes. According to clearance jobs, the agency does have men and women who work in the field.
Speaker 2 00:37:10 Oh, okay.
Speaker 0 00:37:10 They belong to the NSA special collection service, which is a group of singles intelligence, spies who work with the CAA abroad to penetrate foreign communications networks.
Speaker 2 00:37:20 Interesting.
Speaker 0 00:37:20 They say when a hard drive needs to be stolen, that assignment will probably go to the CIA's national clandestine service. Yeah. But things like plugging into embassies overseas, planting antennas to intercept communications and using state of ther technology in the field to acquire signals are almost certainly jobs for the SCS.
Speaker 2 00:37:39 Wow. I am surprised and shocked. I, I did not know that, that I did not
Speaker 0 00:37:44 Know that
Speaker 2 00:37:44 Either.
Speaker 0 00:37:45 Yeah. And then finally the general works for the Pacific security league that is fictional.
Speaker 2 00:37:50 Okay. <laugh> uh, you have a source for that.
Speaker 0 00:37:53 No, I just Googled it and nothing appeared.
Speaker 2 00:37:56 All right. So I've got something from Wikipedia about Zork that text based game. So it is a interactive fiction computer game. It was originally developed by four members of the MIT dynamic modeling group between 1977 and 1979. It was directly inspired by the first text adventure game, colossal cave adventure written in 1975. It distinguished itself in its genre as an especially rich game in terms of both quality of storytelling, sophistication of its text parser, which was limit not limited to simple verb, no commands like hit troll, but recognized some prepositions and conjunctions such as hit the troll with the Elvis sword, which was similar to what Chuck types it. Yeah. So that's why I got first buy effect versus fiction.
Speaker 0 00:38:41 All right. Now it's time for our favorite quotes. Carolyn, as our gastro, you like to go first,
Speaker 3 00:38:46 Uh, sure. I have three. I like the quote that Ellie gave to Chuck, but when he is getting ready for the date and he said, ACEs, Charles, your ACEs. Ah, and I guess that was something his dad used to say, which I thought that was sweet. And then when he is kind of complaining about captain awesome, which is what he calls LA's fiance. He says everything he does is awesome. Climbing mountains, jumping out of planes, flossing <laugh>.
Speaker 0 00:39:16 And I didn't realize it's because he describes those things as awesome.
Speaker 3 00:39:20 Yep. Yeah. He uses the word. Awesome.
Speaker 2 00:39:22 A lot. He, anytime someone says something to him, he says awesome.
Speaker 0 00:39:25 Yeah. That was more next episode that I noticed.
Speaker 3 00:39:27 Yeah. Yep. Um, and the last one was, or while he is trying to defuse the bomb, was it before or after? I can't remember. Casey says don't peek on the C4.
Speaker 0 00:39:36 Oh yeah. It was after
Speaker 2 00:39:38 It was after. Yeah. <laugh> mind if I go next
Speaker 0 00:39:41 By all means,
Speaker 2 00:39:42 Go ahead. Right. I like when, uh, after he shoots Bryce, Casey says don't move <laugh> picky. VAO is like, it's from Batman. And Sarah says, cuz that makes it better. <laugh> and I also like, Sarah's very smooth, like pickup line who says, I'm not sure it's able to receive calls. Cause I never got one from you.
Speaker 0 00:40:00 <laugh> yeah, that was good.
Speaker 2 00:40:01 <laugh> skateboarders who are watching, uh, Chuck and Sarah go down the stairs backwards. Hmm. And the nerd heard are saying computer emergency
Speaker 0 00:40:11 <laugh> yeah. They sound like the turtles from finding email.
Speaker 2 00:40:14 Yeah. Two from Casey. We're the good guys. We get paid to keep bombs from exploding. Mm-hmm <affirmative> and lastly the box and you're not a next man.
Speaker 0 00:40:23 I don't remember that one.
Speaker 2 00:40:24 Yeah. That's when he is telling Chuck don't screw this up and you don't know what you're doing with the bomb. All right. What do you got?
Speaker 0 00:40:30 Okay. Just a couple. Casey says I'm going to Los Angeles. Perfect. I'm feeling a little pasty
Speaker 2 00:40:36 <laugh>
Speaker 0 00:40:37 <laugh> and then when they're going home and Chuck is talking, talking, talking, talking, talking to Morgan and then he just pauses and says, why are you following me home?
Speaker 2 00:40:45 <laugh>
Speaker 0 00:40:45 That guy laugh out at me. All right. So notice it's time for our ratings on a scale of one to 10 martinis, one being Avengers, 1997 and 10 being even better than the pilot of burn notice, how would we rate the pilot of Chuck? I can go first.
Speaker 2 00:40:59 All right. I'm very curious.
Speaker 0 00:41:01 So I had a lot of complaints, but they really didn't hurt the show that much. Okay. I recognize that it's good, but it really did not knock my socks off. Okay. So I'm, I'm gonna give it a reasonable seven out of 10.
Speaker 2 00:41:12 All right. That is reasonable. Carolyn, what rating do you give
Speaker 3 00:41:16 While I do like the show in general, but this wasn't one of my favorite episodes. So I'll say an eight and a half
Speaker 0 00:41:23 <laugh> that's all very good writer
Speaker 2 00:41:25 Say interesting. I'm gonna give it, I'm wondering between a seven and a half and an eight. Like I think it is a good pilot. It really does introduce a lot of the elements that will be there sets up a lot of storylines that will happen in the future and really gets, lets us get to know who these characters are without saying, okay, we know all, all this about them. Why do we need to know more? So I think I'm gonna go with that eight. Yeah.
Speaker 0 00:41:47 Yeah. Unlike burn notice. It was willing to let some things lie and figure it out later.
Speaker 2 00:41:53 <laugh> Uhhuh.
Speaker 0 00:41:55 All right. So that was the pilot. Now it is onto our highest rated episode of the first season. How did you pick it?
Speaker 2 00:42:02 Because I think it's good episode <laugh> and I think it's a good continuing of the storyline without where you didn't necessarily need to just know everything in between.
Speaker 0 00:42:12 Okay. The episode we're talking about is season one, episode 10, Chuck versus the nemesis. And the summary is Chuck talks to Bryce who is alive and held in a CAA facility. Morgan has a girlfriend and brings her to Thanksgiving dinner at Ellie's the nerd, her trains for crowd control on black Friday.
Speaker 2 00:42:30 All right. So we've, before we start the episode in full, we get to the recap where we've, you know, recap at O Cape Bryce is dead. And then Chuck found out about Bryce and Sarah that they were together, Chuck and Sarah at one point kissed. And we find out that Bryce is alive in a tube.
Speaker 0 00:42:47 Yeah. So they really did not put off the will day or won't they with Chuck and Sarah? Huh?
Speaker 2 00:42:51 Mm-hmm <affirmative> yeah.
Speaker 0 00:42:52 They get together and break up in nine episode.
Speaker 2 00:42:55 Well, so yes and no. So when he talks about them breaking up, that is the one thing I guess we need to explain here is that they were, their cover was being boyfriend and girlfriend. They were never actually boyfriend and girlfriend, but then they did kiss in a moment. That was, they thought the world was gonna end. Yeah. Okay. So, so I
Speaker 0 00:43:12 Guess they will, they, or won't they continues.
Speaker 2 00:43:14 Uh, yeah. Yeah. <laugh> so we see Bryce in a bed he's restrained. He wakes up, uh, Sarah and Casey are watching him through one way glass. He apparently asks for Chuck. So big Mike, who is the manager at the BA Moore is looking for Chuck. Apparently Chuck is hiding, trying to call Sarah to talk about the breakup and the kiss. He's regretting breaking up with her.
Speaker 0 00:43:40 I was like, wow, a lot did happen while we were gone.
Speaker 2 00:43:43 <laugh> as he's talking to Morgan about this, you know, he's pouring his heart out and we pan over to see Morgan and his new girlfriend, Anna, who was in the previous episode. Yeah.
Speaker 0 00:43:53 His
Speaker 2 00:43:54 Coworker.
Speaker 0 00:43:54 What a great idea.
Speaker 2 00:43:56 Yep. Um, but yeah, they're clearly not listening cuz they're just busy making out Morgan reveals. He wants to bring Anna to Thanksgiving dinner. But Anna is apparently jealous that Morgan likes Ellie
Speaker 0 00:44:09 Question number one. All right. Why is he still working at buy more?
Speaker 2 00:44:12 Chuck? Yes. It's a good cover. No one expects spy to be at buy more,
Speaker 0 00:44:16 But why not just have him work in an office or something where they can keep an eye on him?
Speaker 2 00:44:21 Because it would raise questions about why I'm doing this. Yeah.
Speaker 0 00:44:26 The reason why is cuz I'm kind of amazed that he risks his life on a weekly basis, but it's quality of life has not increased at all. He's still getting paid the same. He's still living with his sister. I assume he doesn't wanna live with his sister. He just has
Speaker 2 00:44:39 To. Yep.
Speaker 0 00:44:41 So he's really kind of getting shafted here.
Speaker 2 00:44:44 Yep.
Speaker 3 00:44:44 Yeah. I I've commented on that in the past too. I'm like they need to give him a big raise. <laugh> literally not doing enough for him.
Speaker 2 00:44:52 The CAIA is really not worried about his quality of life. They are more concerned about keeping him as an asset.
Speaker 0 00:44:58 Well, it becomes more problematic leader. We'll talk about it. That
Speaker 2 00:45:01 Yeah. Yeah. Big Mike is briefing the staff on black Friday. All the nerd hurdles are often nerd her duty cuz no one be coming in to fix computers. So they're put on crowd control.
Speaker 0 00:45:13 So Morgan seems to be the boss. Now
Speaker 2 00:45:16 He is well, so in between Harry Ang left and there is no assistant manager, but Morgan has been around seemingly the longest in terms of the, the green shirts. So
Speaker 0 00:45:26 What happened to Chuck's application to assistant manager?
Speaker 2 00:45:29 It didn't happen. Spy stuff down the way.
Speaker 0 00:45:33 <laugh> all right. Good. As long as it's related to the larger story.
Speaker 2 00:45:36 Yeah, yeah. That it, yeah. We'll just say that. Here's a question for you, Zach. Have you ever worked black Friday?
Speaker 0 00:45:41 I've had some difficult jobs, but I've never had to work retail. Ah, and I'm very lucky about
Speaker 2 00:45:46 That. I've worked retail. I've worked in what may be as bad or if not worse than working electronics during black Friday, I worked in a toy store.
Speaker 0 00:45:55 Well at least you got to make kids happy.
Speaker 2 00:45:58 Uh, except the kids aren't there on black Friday. Cuz I so here like just, just the parents be very irrational parents who are trying to buy things at all the things that are gonna sell out.
Speaker 0 00:46:07 Yeah. Did Arnold Schwartzer come through looking for turbo man. <laugh>
Speaker 2 00:46:11 Almost, I'm trying to remember what was the popular thing out there? Some sort of like hamster toy thing. I don't, that was the big thing that was that popular that year. Unlike Chuck, I didn't have to report the day before for trading, but I did have to start basically at 11:00 PM Thanksgiving night and then 7:00 AM black Friday morning.
Speaker 0 00:46:31 That is unfortunate. I hope you at least got paid. Well,
Speaker 2 00:46:34 Nope and
Speaker 3 00:46:35 A half
Speaker 2 00:46:36 <laugh> I think I got time and a half, but that's about it. All right. Uh, so yeah, so this, this got me right here. I was like, oh,
Speaker 0 00:46:43 So also in this part with the guy big Mike he's explaining to everybody what black Friday is like, they've been living under a rock, their whole lives,
Speaker 2 00:46:53 As I've said often in the past, sometimes you just need to drop in these common sense lines just to make sure that everyone, I mean, Hey for if have younger viewers there who are watching, they might not know. Oh, black but black Friday. Isn't why it's a big deal.
Speaker 0 00:47:05 I mean, yeah. You gotta find out about black Friday at some point.
Speaker 3 00:47:08 Uh, I took it as he was trying to psych him up and get 'em inspired and excited. There you go.
Speaker 2 00:47:12 Black Friday.
Speaker 0 00:47:14 That's a good interpretation. <laugh>
Speaker 2 00:47:16 Sarah comes into the store and Chuck starts rambling and Sarah says we have to talk and Chuck doesn't get the idea and just keeps rambling on about the kiss and I'll be back together. And she finally shuts them up by saying, Bryce is alive.
Speaker 0 00:47:31 The first thing everyone wants to know, including Chuck is how is that possible? Mm-hmm <affirmative> and it's never answered <laugh> I did like that. The man wanted to talk about their relationship. That's a subversion of 2007 gender roles. Mm-hmm
Speaker 2 00:47:43 <affirmative> so Chuck is brought to the room where Bryce is. Bryce sees him, but doesn't believe it's him. Doesn't think it's the real Chuck. So how does he make him prove that he's really Chuck speaking cl on
Speaker 0 00:47:55 It's kind of made me roll my eyes a little bit, but it's a reminder that yes, you can look like Matt bomber and still speak cl on it's possible. By the way, the fact that Matt bomber's in the show really helped a lot. Oh Matt. Bomber's great. You can see one doom patrol now. Mm-hmm <affirmative> also on HBO, max
Speaker 2 00:48:10 As well as another show I loved. And I think it's why mostly why he's not in Chuck as much is, uh, he was in his own show.
Speaker 0 00:48:17 White collar.
Speaker 2 00:48:18 White collar. Yes. Which I loved that show, but yeah. So he, he tells Chuck answers in, cling on. He's kind of embarrassed about it because he doesn't want Sarah to see speaking cling on.
Speaker 0 00:48:27 Right.
Speaker 2 00:48:28 Uh, Bri says he clinging on's a bit rusty. And Chuck asked, why did you bring me the IEC? Well, they wanted who's who's they? And so he says, come here real close, which is the worst thing to do.
Speaker 0 00:48:39 The, they say to me is kind of like, yeah, he went to Tahiti
Speaker 2 00:48:43 <laugh> it's a magical place.
Speaker 3 00:48:46 <laugh> did we know when Chuck and Bryce were in college? Like what year that was?
Speaker 0 00:48:50 They said you were in Stanford five years ago.
Speaker 2 00:48:53 So 2002,
Speaker 0 00:48:55 Unless you dropped out early.
Speaker 3 00:48:57 Yeah. And when did the Lord of the rings movies come out
Speaker 0 00:49:00 Around this time? Yeah.
Speaker 2 00:49:01 Oh, you're wondering if they, if it was made later, if they would be speaking Elvis instead.
Speaker 3 00:49:07 Yeah. I was wondering if, if they all would've also focused on Elvis cuz that's another big, big language.
Speaker 2 00:49:14 That's a prettier sounding language though.
Speaker 3 00:49:16 I feel like Sarah would've been more impressed if he was speaking Elvis.
Speaker 2 00:49:19 That's true. Yeah.
Speaker 0 00:49:20 People learning Elvis is not as common as people learn in Klingon.
Speaker 2 00:49:23 I've dabbled in both.
Speaker 0 00:49:27 So also around here, there's a credit of Matthew bomber, which I like mm-hmm <affirmative> not Matt bomber.
Speaker 2 00:49:32 Yeah. Chuck gets taken when he gets real close to Bryce, he gets taken at <laugh>. I labeled this as needle point, but that's not quite right.
Speaker 0 00:49:41 <laugh> yeah. It's close enough.
Speaker 2 00:49:42 The point of the syringe, that sounds better than needle point.
Speaker 0 00:49:46 How convenient did they just left it next to the dangerous killer?
Speaker 2 00:49:49 Casey and Sarah come in, uh, Bryce is surprised to see both of them and we cut to our credits or our title sequence rather mm-hmm <affirmative> which is the first time you've presumably seen that Zach cuz they didn't have credits for the or titles for the, I enjoy these titles and I love the theme song.
Speaker 0 00:50:05 Okay. Yeah. I didn't have any notes about it. This is fine. Yeah.
Speaker 2 00:50:08 So Chuck and Bryce get into an elevator. Once the elevator closes, Bryce starts being all buddy, buddy with Chuck saying you knew I was never gonna do that.
Speaker 0 00:50:17 <laugh> Chuck previously said he's definitely gonna do it.
Speaker 2 00:50:20 <laugh> and so the elevator stops before we, he, they wanted to, and this is where we meet Tommy.
Speaker 0 00:50:26 So now I have questions. So this creepy guy we learn is part of Hydra or whatever,
Speaker 2 00:50:30 Fall procr. All right. Well hold on. Let me, let me
Speaker 0 00:50:33 No, I, no, that's not my point. Okay. My point is chunk is supposed to be undercover as himself. So why can you bring him to this CIA black site where he's meeting all these CIA people, including one of 'em that turns out to be dirty
Speaker 2 00:50:47 Because this was the only way they could get Bryce to talk and that overrided any security concerns?
Speaker 3 00:50:52 Well, they probably like led him directly to the one room they were gonna allow him to.
Speaker 2 00:50:57 And so they didn't anticipate him, you know, getting held at the point of a syringe to be hostage and then go to another site where someone else will find that turns
Speaker 3 00:51:07 Out, down the elevator. Yeah.
Speaker 2 00:51:09 Chuck flashes on Tommy and we get the, basically this whole info dump on fulcrum. It's a undercover spying. It's like hydro Spector or any of those others. And I like those kind of things.
Speaker 0 00:51:19 Yeah. I assume that they talked about it in other episodes that we just didn't
Speaker 2 00:51:23 Say, Nope, this is the first we hear of fulcrum.
Speaker 0 00:51:25 Oh, okay.
Speaker 2 00:51:26 So you're not missing anything so far. Is it nice close the elevator. Chuck asks what's fulcrum and he's like, wait, you flash, do you, you, you absorb the images. It worked. I knew it would work. And then injects Chuck, but not with the full dose. Chuck gets woken up by Sarah and Casey. Yeah. We find out it's not a full dose and it should be out of his system in a few hours. We find out that they're not going after Bryce, cuz that's not their assignment. Their assignments keep Chuck safe.
Speaker 0 00:51:53 Yeah. I like how they're like it's somebody else's problem now.
Speaker 2 00:51:56 So Chuck continues to try to talk about the relationship and but before they actually get anywhere, Ellie interrupts and asks of Sarah is coming Thanksgiving, which he said yes, of course. So the next day Morgan is training the nerd herd on crowd control and he brings up what to do. If there is a complete emergency situation, a pineapple situation, it's an impossible event. That'll change everything. You get a full buy more evacuation.
Speaker 0 00:52:21 I didn't find the pineapple thing to be that funny, but this actually reminded me. But no, I like the old phone, the flip phones
Speaker 2 00:52:28 Uhhuh,
Speaker 0 00:52:28 But there remind be okay. The last episode, sorry. I forgot to mention this, but the bomb disarming scene mm-hmm <affirmative> Chuck takes a call from Morgan while he's disarming a bomb. That made me roll my eyes too. Okay. It was,
Speaker 2 00:52:41 But if not for that, they would never stop the bomb.
Speaker 0 00:52:43 It's convenient writing more of which we get at this episode too.
Speaker 2 00:52:48 Chucked a call from Ellie during this training session. Apparently she's in full on Thanksgiving, panic mode. So he's got to go by the store to pick up some stuff. Chuck gets home and Casey is there in like a ver like a suit. Apparently Ellie invited him. Oh yeah. So that's the other part of the cover is that Casey lives next door. Now
Speaker 0 00:53:06 It it's like the mine kind of boggles. I did like that. LA invited him, I guess she knows that they're like coworkers
Speaker 2 00:53:12 And the coworkers and that they, he lives next door.
Speaker 3 00:53:14 Yeah,
Speaker 0 00:53:14 Yeah. Yeah.
Speaker 2 00:53:15 I mean, if you had a top secret government computer in the head of someone, you would post someone nearby so that they can, if something happens,
Speaker 0 00:53:23 I don't know. But it would stand a reason that they would put him in a safe house, under armed guard,
Speaker 2 00:53:27 Which is exactly what Casey would wanna do. But Sarah doesn't want that to happen to Chuck.
Speaker 0 00:53:32 Yeah. Yeah.
Speaker 2 00:53:34 Chuck asked Casey about when, uh, Bryce previously said previously said to him here to try again because it he's like, it sounds like you killed him. I was like, yes I did. I was ordered to
Speaker 0 00:53:46 Yeah. You know who else was just ordered to Casey?
Speaker 3 00:53:51 Who?
Speaker 0 00:53:52 The Nazis.
Speaker 2 00:53:54 This is why I didn't say I knew was just,
Speaker 0 00:53:56 Thank you, Carol. My
Speaker 2 00:53:58 Straight hair. Oh man. Chuck tells Ellie, then Morgan's bring Anna or Anna. I don't keep saying Anna Morgan, Anna and Sarah arrive. Anna is very standoffish against Ellie. Right? Dinner. Morgan is enjoying the food. Very vocally.
Speaker 0 00:54:16 He's practically orgasming over it. Like in, from Harry met Sally <laugh>.
Speaker 2 00:54:21 Chuck goes to get the marshmallows from the car that he forgot for the
Speaker 3 00:54:25 Sweet data caster.
Speaker 2 00:54:27 Yeah. That one. And he sees Bryce outside who says he's not there to fight. And like Bryce asked what happened to you. You, you know, you could have been the next bill gates. So, but uh, yeah. It's because you got him kicked out of Stanford. So
Speaker 0 00:54:41 Everybody in the show wants to just talk about their feelings all the time. Bryce risked his life and his freedom just to make sure his friendship with Chuck was all patched
Speaker 2 00:54:51 Up. I mean, Chuck's a good guy and his good friend. And so he actually wants to, he knows that he screwed up his life or, well, maybe, I don't know if he does at this point.
Speaker 0 00:54:59 I did like the duality of Bryce being the nemesis, but also a decent person. Mm-hmm <affirmative> at least it seems that way.
Speaker 2 00:55:05 Yeah. So Bryce says he really needs to talk to Sarah about fulcrum and how, because they want, want, they want Bryce because they think Bryce is the intersect.
Speaker 0 00:55:15 Yes.
Speaker 2 00:55:16 So Chuck goes back inside. Chuck tries to tell Sarah that Bryce is in his bedroom or he like mouths it. So Sarah goes,
Speaker 0 00:55:24 So do none of these characters have parents,
Speaker 2 00:55:27 Uh, like who?
Speaker 0 00:55:29 Well, jock, Ellie, Sarah Casey Morgan.
Speaker 2 00:55:33 We get to see some of their parents later.
Speaker 0 00:55:35 Well, you guys mentioned parents. So I, I thought Chuck's parents had died. Just like all great heroes.
Speaker 3 00:55:41 We will know all of their parents at some point,
Speaker 2 00:55:45 Except for, well, not, not, uh, Casey's parents. Well
Speaker 0 00:55:47 Then I would ask why they're not spending Thanksgiving with them, but there
Speaker 2 00:55:50 Is good reasoning why
Speaker 0 00:55:51 They're like estranged or something. Yes,
Speaker 2 00:55:53 Yes. It's good. Put it as that. Leave it at that. Yeah. As Sarah goes inside Chuck's bedroom, we, she sees no one there. And then Bry appears from, I dunno, was he like spider Manning on the ceiling hoses doing?
Speaker 0 00:56:05 I think so. Was
Speaker 3 00:56:06 He hanging onto right?
Speaker 0 00:56:09 Yeah. Using the suction cups.
Speaker 2 00:56:11 <laugh> so Bryce says that he was on rogue. That was all a mission. He kisses her and Chuck sees goes back to the cha table. Jealous.
Speaker 0 00:56:21 Yeah. It's something out of a frigging soap opera.
Speaker 2 00:56:24 So they're going around the table. They, what they're thankful for Chuck, uh, in a not very subtle code tells Casey that Bryce is in the bedroom.
Speaker 0 00:56:33 I did like that. Casey has nothing to be thankful for.
Speaker 2 00:56:36 <laugh> that's
Speaker 0 00:56:37 Very young.
Speaker 3 00:56:38 Yeah.
Speaker 2 00:56:39 Bryce escapes before, uh, anyone can get him back at a table and is getting jealous about how much Morgan is drawing the food and like throws a fit
Speaker 0 00:56:48 The way to a man's heart is through his stomach.
Speaker 2 00:56:50 So as they're looking for Bryce, Sarah figures out that Chuck saw them kiss, but then they notice Bryce in Case's apartment and they catch him. They have a Mexican standoff, he reveals more about fulcrum. They're a special access group in the CIA that recruited him. Or he realizes that it's an internal strike and that fulcrum had plans for the intersect and he didn't know who to trust. So he sent the email to Chuck, but why Chuck? Because he needed someone who didn't know about the CIA or fulcrum and who could, he could be sure he could trust.
Speaker 0 00:57:20 Yeah. And presumably someone who was a decent person mm-hmm
Speaker 2 00:57:23 <affirmative> and he also mentions a mission, which, uh, makes Chuck flash on it, which may can verify everything that was going on. Right. About when they're, you know, all seemingly about to get along Casey enters and shoots price.
Speaker 0 00:57:35 Yeah. And I was like, well, price, ISNT gonna die here. Does, is he a mortal? Like, did they do some kind
Speaker 2 00:57:41 He's a Highlander.
Speaker 0 00:57:42 Yeah. They do some super science to him where he just grows back.
Speaker 2 00:57:45 No, it turns out that Bryce was wearing a Bulletproof vest.
Speaker 0 00:57:48 Yeah. There you go. So did Chuck faint? Cause he gets up off the ground later. Yeah. I like that. <laugh>
Speaker 2 00:57:55 So Chuck asks how he is still alive from the first time he was shot. Not this time. <laugh>
Speaker 0 00:58:00 Right.
Speaker 2 00:58:00 Bryce says he's not sure tells them what happened after he got shot. He was brought back by a fulcrum team.
Speaker 0 00:58:06 Yeah. He says they probably used one of the European clinics. I like that. It's so mysterious.
Speaker 3 00:58:11 <laugh> yeah. I was wondering, yeah.
Speaker 0 00:58:14 Yeah. It's right up there with Tahiti
Speaker 2 00:58:16 <laugh> so fulcrum one know where the intersect files were. He tells them that he's the intersect. Yeah. That's why they're chasing him. Bryce wants to turn himself in, but needs to know that he's getting handed off to the Rio CIA. So Chuck has the idea of all right. You know, if I flash on them, they're fulcrum. So if I, if we see them at the handoff and I don't flash they're okay.
Speaker 3 00:58:36 That's a lot of trust in this, uh, magical database.
Speaker 0 00:58:39 Well, I actually liked it. It was good writing to help explain why Chuck still needs to be involved with what's going on
Speaker 2 00:58:47 And they realize, all right, so we need to have a handoff somewhere, public, lots of witnesses where this can all happen. And so they are gonna have the handoff at the buy more at black, during black Friday.
Speaker 0 00:58:58 Oh my God. This is so stupid. I hated this part.
Speaker 2 00:59:01 What?
Speaker 0 00:59:03 Okay. I was under the impression they were trying to keep Chuck being us by a secret. Yeah. So why would they bring like there's coworkers and people who know him? Like you think eventually people who aren't supposed to know, like his coworkers will figure out that Sarah, like someone that's up up with Sarah and something's up with Casey. <laugh> like they could have done this literally anywhere else,
Speaker 2 00:59:28 Somewhere that they could control the situation where they know that there's gonna be a large amount of people.
Speaker 0 00:59:33 Yeah. You could do a public park and obviously they didn't have control over the situation cuz the situation gets outta control.
Speaker 2 00:59:39 Fair enough. On black Friday, the crowd is huge. Anna still mad at Morgan, Sarah and Bryce enter the store. And as they do, Morgan sees Bryce and he is very suspicious. Says that he looks very much like a guy that basically ruined his best friend's life.
Speaker 0 00:59:53 Oh my God. Who could have seen that coming? That if you put Bryce near someone who knows who Bryce is, that guy might recognize Bryce. And then the whole thing goes up in spoke
Speaker 2 01:00:01 Except Bryce is supposed to be dead. So he is just very, that's why he's, doesn't actually make it a big deal.
Speaker 0 01:00:06 But you could have had it literally anywhere else where there are no more events.
Speaker 3 01:00:11 Did Morgan know Bryce?
Speaker 2 01:00:12 That's a good question that I thought of while we were watching. Cause I don't know that he did
Speaker 3 01:00:17 Cause they were off at college.
Speaker 2 01:00:18 Yeah. So Morgan, I think, you know, was friends with Chuck from, you know, childhood and then he went away and so he, he may have like seen pictures of Bryce, but never actually met Bryce and probably vice versa
Speaker 0 01:00:30 Or is totally the type to Facebook stock Chuck all the time. He probably saw some Facebook pictures of them together. There you go.
Speaker 3 01:00:37 Facebook didn't exist in 2002. Yeah.
Speaker 0 01:00:41 Oh yeah. Yep.
Speaker 2 01:00:42 That's true. Not till four.
Speaker 0 01:00:44 <laugh> well you see Matt bomber once you're gonna remember that beautiful man face <laugh> also something else I wanted to point out was that Anna says to Morgan, I was just testing you and you failed. I may not know much about relationships, but I know that's a red flag.
Speaker 2 01:00:59 Oh yeah. Oh yeah.
Speaker 0 01:01:00 Don't do that.
Speaker 2 01:01:01 Yep. Yep.
Speaker 3 01:01:02 I think that's a good call. Uhhuh
Speaker 2 01:01:04 <affirmative> so the CIA pickup arrives, Chuck does his past doesn't flash on them. So they're legit.
Speaker 0 01:01:10 I also like there's a shot that shows call of duty for sale
Speaker 2 01:01:14 <laugh> flashback
Speaker 0 01:01:16 Classic game. Now a classic game. Mm-hmm
Speaker 2 01:01:19 <affirmative> Jeff and Lester are hiding, uh, underneath the, uh, the, or the nerd herd, uh, desk. So this is where we find out. Apparently the registers are down and, but Jeff needs to fix them because they're, he's the only one who knows how to they work. Cuz they're from the eighties and Morgan, you know, does a rallying cry, gets them to actually get out and actually go to fix the, uh, or try to fix the registers before he gets handed off. Chuck and Bryce have a talk. He apologizes. Chuck says that, you know, he has one friend in the world basically. Whereas Chuck has, you know, lots of friends and a good seemingly a good life.
Speaker 0 01:01:58 Yeah. Chuck has so many friends. He's not socially awkward at all. I'm no, I'm not getting over it.
Speaker 2 01:02:04 I dunno what a reaction you're gonna expect from me about this
Speaker 0 01:02:07 <laugh> strong agreement.
Speaker 2 01:02:08 Nope. That's not. It's not gonna happen anyway. So Bryce, thanks Chuck for everything. Sarah is gonna take Bryce in. So Sarah and Bryce are riding in the truck, in the, the car with the, uh, CIA agents. And Bryce tries to get Sarah to come with him. They're about to kiss when they get hit by a truck.
Speaker 0 01:02:28 Again, that keeps happening
Speaker 2 01:02:29 As that's happening. Tommy from fulcrum finds Chuck in the buy more says, you know, I'm looking for a computer. You may have heard of it's called the intersect.
Speaker 0 01:02:38 Yeah. He also calls him Charles, which I thought was
Speaker 2 01:02:40 Funny. Sarah and Bryce are being lifted out of the car. Tommy reveals. He has men in the store. They have neutralized Casey and Tommy says he has no functions about killing everyone in the store, in the store if he has to.
Speaker 0 01:02:54 Wow. And now all of his friends and coworkers are in danger. Who could that have predicted that would've happened? Oh yeah, me
Speaker 2 01:03:01 <laugh> so Sarah and Bryce wake up and take out their guards or maybe they're playing possum for part of that. But yeah. So they take out the guards and take, take the car that, uh, was about to take them away to find Chuck. Tommy has Chuck under his control. And as they're leaving, Jeff comes up and says, tells 'em they're registered down. What do I do? Tommy says, save more than one word and I'll kill you both. So he sells Jeff pineapple.
Speaker 0 01:03:28 This was pretty good writing. It reminded me of the doctor who, where he has four questions or he has one question to save his own life.
Speaker 2 01:03:34 So Jeff goes to tell Morgan pineapple, which you know, Morgan doesn't believe and said, no. Chuck told me that, all right, I'm gonna evacuate the store. So he pulls the fire alarms gets his big megaphone out, tells everyone to leave the store. There's a big stampede. Big Mike hears this happening. Tries to stop people saying, no, it's a mistake. Everything's fine. You gotta stay.
Speaker 0 01:03:54 Yeah. This seems dangerous.
Speaker 2 01:03:55 Trampled. Yeah. Anna is about to get trampled, but Morgan saves her is carrying her out of the store. So basically now all the only people left are all the spies. Chuck and Casey go into the entertainment center where there is apparently a big stash of guns. If you press a button underneath the table.
Speaker 0 01:04:11 Yeah, that was great. And then they have an, a team shootout.
Speaker 2 01:04:14 Yep. So there's big shootout.
Speaker 0 01:04:15 No one gets hit.
Speaker 2 01:04:17 Nope. Sarah and Bryce arrive and Sarah and Bryce have this really good synchronized fights. Like I was admiring some of the, a lot of their kicks. They, those were good kicks,
Speaker 0 01:04:26 Kicking impossible.
Speaker 2 01:04:28 <laugh> in the action of all of this. Tommy gets a hold of Chuck.
Speaker 0 01:04:32 I do like how Chuck keeps getting taken hostage. That's funny.
Speaker 2 01:04:35 Yep. Bryce and Sarah have a Mexican standoff with Tommy and Bryce asks him something in, cling on when Chuck responds. Bryce shoots Chuck and then Tommy.
Speaker 0 01:04:49 Yeah. Did you like this? I don't know if it was an intentional callback to speed. Oh, do you remember that part in speed or he shoots the hostage? Yeah.
Speaker 2 01:04:56 No, I, I didn't see it as such, but yeah. I, I can see it and Chuck's wakes up and reveals that what Bryce had asked him was, are you wearing a vest?
Speaker 0 01:05:04 Finally, someone in this show makes a smart decision.
Speaker 3 01:05:07 <laugh> I'm just glad he interpreted it correctly. Cause what if he was just wearing like a normal vest and it wasn't a Bulletproof vest. Things could have gone very wrong.
Speaker 0 01:05:15 Good point. Carolyn,
Speaker 2 01:05:16 The NSA, uh, backup slash cleanup team comes in. They're all disguised as firemen. Anna is now no longer mad at Morgan because he passed this test again. Yes. Red flag. <laugh>
Speaker 0 01:05:29 I like the firefighters with guns. I thought that was a cool duality.
Speaker 2 01:05:32 Yeah. Big Mike is mad at Morgan because he thinks he ruined black Friday the biggest day of the year for them. But then of course in perfect timing, one of the firemen comes up to tell big Mike that there was a gas leak in the store and whoever found the alarm probably saved a ton of lives.
Speaker 0 01:05:48 Wow. What did nice NSA brow. All right.
Speaker 2 01:05:51 So Bryce is in the entertainment center giving a report to general Beckman and then comes out wearing a tux. He's got a new mission. He's going after fulcrum on his own, off the radar.
Speaker 0 01:06:01 So I guess everything's like cool. Mm-hmm <affirmative> didn't he go rogue? And the NSA tried to kill him.
Speaker 2 01:06:07 It was like Tom cruise in every mission. Impossible. He rent rogue, but for a good reason and there was justified and it was actually a secret mission.
Speaker 0 01:06:14 So it all got cleared up. He got clear.
Speaker 2 01:06:17 Now Bryce Larkin is dead and he'll stay that way. And then he tells Sarah, we always have Omaha
Speaker 0 01:06:22 <laugh>.
Speaker 2 01:06:23 So later that night, Chuck knocks on Casey's door, invites him to have some leftovers from Thanksgiving. Mm.
Speaker 0 01:06:30 Thanksgiving leftover. So
Speaker 2 01:06:32 Good. Made you like crave Turkey. I was like, oh, I, I wanted like the Turkey sandwich, like I could make. Ooh, just like the,
Speaker 0 01:06:39 So have I ever told you guys about the Thanksgiving leftover waffles?
Speaker 2 01:06:43 No.
Speaker 0 01:06:44 So this is only my family. Does you take a w okay. And you spray it down with cooking oil or whatever. Okay. You can take, you do with mashed potatoes or stuffing or maybe something else. Basically you take like mashed potatoes and you put in the waffle maker and you make a waffle out of it and then you eat mashed potato waffle and
Speaker 2 01:07:01 It's good. Interesting. All right.
Speaker 3 01:07:03 I would eat that. That sounds great.
Speaker 2 01:07:05 I might go to like Thanksgiving sandwich, if you have leftovers is basically the entire meal in a sandwich. So you're you mashed potatoes, your gravy, your you're stuffing, your Turkey,
Speaker 0 01:07:15 Something cranberry sauce. Turkey. Yeah.
Speaker 2 01:07:17 I'm not so big on cranberry sauce, but cranberry shop everything. Besides that, I know there's a, one of my previous jobs. When I worked at a sandwich shop when they had a holiday Turkey sandwich, which was always came around Thanksgivings, always the best. Anyways, back to this episode
Speaker 0 01:07:31 Anyways
Speaker 2 01:07:31 Thanksgiving. So Chuck asks Casey about Omaha. Like why would he say that specific wording and case? He says, it's probably a code. You some sort of prearranged contact point. If Sarah wants to join up with him because he's going dark. And so if she's gonna, she's gonna join, he's gotta do it now. And we cut to Sarah in her place trying to decide what to do. Looks like her bags packed. Bryce is calling her on the landline as Chuck is calling on her cell. And we see her not knowing who to answer.
Speaker 0 01:08:01 Get it. Do you get it
Speaker 2 01:08:03 That our episode ends
Speaker 0 01:08:05 <laugh> I did like how there's a fade out of both the phones going. I bet that's the MCee influence. Cause they do that on the X files too. Yeah. <laugh>
Speaker 2 01:08:13 All right. So, so do you have any spy effect versus spy fiction here?
Speaker 0 01:08:17 Uh, yes. I have one quick thing for spy effect versus fiction. All right. I Googled the phrase internal strike. Okay. Or internal strike spy, and nothing seems to show up. So I guess it's not a thing. Okay. But then on history.com what's the real history of black Friday.
Speaker 2 01:08:35 <laugh>
Speaker 0 01:08:36 Cause I was like, did people not know what it was in 2007.
Speaker 2 01:08:39 All right. Alright.
Speaker 0 01:08:40 So back in the 1950s police in the city of Philadelphia used the term to describe the chaos that ensued on the day after Thanksgiving, when awards of suburban choppers and tourists flooded the city in advanced the big army Navy football game held on that Saturday every year. Not only would Philly cops not be able to take the day off, they'd have to work extra long, dealing with the additional crowds and traffic by 1961, black Friday had become a thing in Philadelphia, even though the city's merchants tried to change it to big Friday in order to remove the negative connotations.
Speaker 2 01:09:14 Hmm.
Speaker 0 01:09:15 The term didn't spread to the rest of the country until much later, as recently as 1985, it wasn't in common use nationwide. But then the eighties is when retailers found a way to reinvent black Friday, turn it into something positive. And that's the red to black where they go from the red, into the black, uh, when they finally turn to profit that's that's where that origin. So someone just made up that explanation. <laugh>. In other words,
Speaker 3 01:09:39 I was gonna say that I'm now Googling where to get Thanksgiving sandwiches in this area. Ooh.
Speaker 0 01:09:45 <laugh> let us know posted on social media. <laugh>
Speaker 2 01:09:49 I've got a few things from Wikipedia, a Bulletproof vest also known as a ballistic vest or a bullet resistance vest is an item of body armor that helps absorb the comp impact or, and reduce or stop penetration to the torso from a firearm filed projectiles and fragmentation from explosions.
Speaker 0 01:10:06 Okay.
Speaker 2 01:10:07 Couple different types, both hard and soft armor. It looks like the one that they were wearing is soft armor, which is usually made of woven fabrics, synthetic or natural and protects up to a N I J level. I, I, I don't know what that means. <laugh> all right. Uh, can be worn in, uh, combined with hard armor as part of an injunction armor system. Interesting. Yeah. So I know that it is also very true. Likely they stand here that, yeah. Even though it's Bulletproof it's still hurts.
Speaker 0 01:10:36 Well, it makes me wonder if it's less effective. The closer the guy with the gun is cuz Matt bomber was standing close, so
Speaker 2 01:10:42 Yep. Yep. Uh, I don't know that that probably is a thing, but I don't know enough about it. Okay. Lastly, I have the cling on language is from Wikipedia. The Klingon language is the constructed language spoken by a fictional alien race that Clingons in the star Trek universe described in the 1985 book. The cling on dictionary by mark Rin who created the language, it was dis deliberately designed to sound alien. It has a number of hype logically thank you. <laugh> uncommon features the language basic sound was devised. Along with a few words was devised by actor James din for star Trek motion picture. Now I went on the cling on Wikipedia, which is clinging on Wiki and to see what they actually say in Chuck,
Speaker 0 01:11:28 Go in the extra mile. We appreciate that.
Speaker 2 01:11:30 So in the first scene he says, cling on hu Daja LA, which means do you speak, cling on mm-hmm <affirmative> and Chuck responds hija Kala, which is yes. Apparently you are healthy again. So <laugh>
Speaker 0 01:11:44 Oh, nice. A little extra there.
Speaker 2 01:11:46 Yeah. But so you here's the, the one that I was really wondering about, cuz I was like, is there a word for Vester, Bulletproof vest in Klingon mm-hmm <affirmative> hija. The jacket of shield has yes. No.
Speaker 3 01:12:03 Oh, so he did say
Speaker 2 01:12:06 Like, are you wearing a like shielded thing? Yeah.
Speaker 0 01:12:10 I thought he was gonna say like, do you have your shields up
Speaker 2 01:12:12 <laugh> and Chuck respond hija, which is yes. And according to cling on wi.wiki, uh, the sentences are not grammatically entirely correct. The pronunciation is or is not perfect, but fine. <laugh>
Speaker 0 01:12:26 I'm glad they, uh, gave us a rating.
Speaker 2 01:12:29 Yes. And apparently mark okra has confirmed that he did not do the translation and it actually does not know who did them.
Speaker 0 01:12:36 So I saw a news report a while ago about this guy who raised his daughter to be bilingual.
Speaker 2 01:12:41 And one of them was cling on
Speaker 0 01:12:43 You saw this?
Speaker 2 01:12:43 No, but I just had a guess. So
Speaker 0 01:12:45 They have an interview with this like 14 year old girl and she's like, yeah. Uh, I speak Kling on, I don't like star Trek.
Speaker 2 01:12:52 <laugh>
Speaker 0 01:12:54 Doesn't seem too happy about it.
Speaker 2 01:12:55 Oh
Speaker 3 01:12:56 Man. You could have done other things with her childhood <laugh> mm-hmm <affirmative> you never know could come in handy if
Speaker 0 01:13:02 They say that, if you learn one language, learning more language is easier.
Speaker 2 01:13:06 Mm-hmm <affirmative> yeah. It's true.
Speaker 3 01:13:07 Very true. True. And learning other languages help you helps you learn English grammar as well.
Speaker 2 01:13:13 Although clinging on grammar is kind of weird
Speaker 3 01:13:16 <laugh> yeah, but don't say comparing the parts, I assume
Speaker 2 01:13:19 This is true. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. I appreciated this part cuz as someone who dabbled in clinging on, I was like, you know what? I like that all this show enough and not just like, they actually did most of the work in terms of get, you know, getting to speak to clinging on like, uh, the other shows I've seen where like they try to have them speak clung on and clearly not cling on. They just made up some, you know, hard sounds that sounded cling on ish. But that's what I have for spy fact versus spy fiction.
Speaker 0 01:13:45 All right. Now it's time for our favorite quotes. Carolyn, would you like to go first again?
Speaker 3 01:13:48 Sure. I would love to. Let's see. Let's see. Uh, one of them when they meet the fulcrum agent and um, Bryce is threatening to kill Chuck and, and Tommy says, I wouldn't want you to kill some random person. I just feel terrible.
Speaker 0 01:14:02 <laugh> he's bad guy lying.
Speaker 3 01:14:04 <laugh> um, and then when Chuck is at Thanksgiving, uh, and everyone says, what they're thankful for chucks is I'm thankful that Bryce Larkin is dead and not currently in my room, making out with my girlfriend.
Speaker 0 01:14:19 <laugh> wow. Girlfriend. That's what presumptuous of you Chuck <laugh>.
Speaker 2 01:14:22 Wow.
Speaker 3 01:14:23 I guess they hadn't told anyone else that they had breaking up and that's how Casey finds out that Bryce is there. So that's fine. Right? And then, um, the last one I have during black Friday, when Jeff is hiding under the, the desks and the registers are down, he says, Jeff, the registers are down. You're the only one that can fix them. You're scared. I'm scared. We're all scared. But if they can't check out, they can't leave. And if people can't leave, more people will come in and if more people come in, the store will explode. The store will explode.
Speaker 2 01:14:53 All right, I've got from big Mike Black Friday when regular Housewives transformed into a crazy mob, blinded by door, prizes, sales and the urge to get the Christmas shopping done early, which you know, having worked black Friday gets me right here.
Speaker 0 01:15:04 PTSD flashback,
Speaker 2 01:15:06 Chuck, Sarah in case you're right inside one girlish scream from me and they would go run into combat mode.
Speaker 0 01:15:11 I like that one too.
Speaker 2 01:15:12 And from Chuck seriously, it's not fair to not tell someone how much a Bulletproof vest still hurts.
Speaker 0 01:15:18 I'm sure you can imagine. Chuck, you think eight episodes of spy action. Would've toughened them up a little bit.
Speaker 2 01:15:23 Yeah, no <laugh> he's still Chuck.
Speaker 0 01:15:27 So in the beginning someone says you what habitat after Thanksgiving and someone else says the trip defend wears off and the liquor kicks in
Speaker 2 01:15:33 That's Jeff. Yes. <laugh>. Yeah.
Speaker 0 01:15:35 Chuck is talking about Thanksgiving, but it's a time to talk about as he just says, just remember, it's not my fault.
Speaker 2 01:15:41 <laugh>
Speaker 0 01:15:42 Very nice. Someone says no guns of Thanksgiving. The same part where it says, you're the only guy who knows how to touch the knows how to use the registers. Someone else says, ah, someone touched me
Speaker 2 01:15:52 <laugh>
Speaker 0 01:15:54 And then finally, towards the end, when it looks like Sarah's going to leave, somebody says, we'll get you a new girl, which was so coldblooded seemed like the kinda thing that like a bad guy would say. Yeah. Or Sean Cony, James Bond. Right. So now it's time for our ratings on a scale of one 10 martinis, you know the draw at this point, one being Avengers 97, 10 being better than burn notice. How would we rate Chuck versus the nemesis? Someone else go first this time.
Speaker 3 01:16:22 Did I go first? Last time?
Speaker 0 01:16:24 No, I did. You did
Speaker 3 01:16:24 Not. Okay. Um, I will give it an eight mm-hmm <affirmative> slightly less than the pilot, but I, I thought it was enjoyable.
Speaker 2 01:16:34 All right. Uh, I'll go next. So I'm gonna give this to nine because I really like this episode. I like they're building the mythology of the show more they're introducing fulcrum, which becomes a much bigger part later on. You also get the return of Bryce, which I like, you know, it was a nice kind of dangling threat from the beginning. And I get, you see him as a character and also see how good a spy team he and Sarah were like, I really like the, the action and the martial arts in their scenes. I thought it was really good. And I just, yeah, I really liked this episode and I love the cling on in there too.
Speaker 0 01:17:08 <laugh> good. I'm glad that you liked it. Okay. So here's what I'm thinking. I like Matt baller Uhhuh, but I don't care about the nerd crew people. And I don't like to spend so much time with them. All the, the love triangles is like, are you just shitting me? There's so many love triangles, a lot of stupid writing decisions. Like having the big confrontation be at the buy more. That being said, like it's still perfectly enjoyable, but I didn't like it as much as the pilot. So I'm gonna give it a six out of 10.
Speaker 2 01:17:36 Interesting. All right. All right.
Speaker 0 01:17:37 Love triangles. <laugh> I, I also like how they don't just give all, there's a lot of good mysteries and they don't just give it all away. So, you know, they, they keep you hooked. Mm-hmm that's good. But they also don't drag the mysteries out forever.
Speaker 2 01:17:49 Yeah. Not like a CW show.
Speaker 0 01:17:51 Oh
Speaker 3 01:17:51 God, wait. Now I need to count how many love triangles there are.
Speaker 2 01:17:55 <laugh> well, we've got
Speaker 3 01:17:56 Chuck, Sarah and Bryce, Morgan, Ellie, and Anna.
Speaker 0 01:18:03 Is there really a love triangle though? If Ellie really doesn't like him,
Speaker 2 01:18:06 Like a one sided one. I
Speaker 3 01:18:08 Mean, I assumed you were counting that.
Speaker 0 01:18:10 No, you're right. I did. I totally did.
Speaker 2 01:18:13 <laugh>
Speaker 3 01:18:14 Is that it? Is there anymore?
Speaker 0 01:18:16 That's it? No, that's
Speaker 3 01:18:16 All. Okay. <laugh>
Speaker 0 01:18:19 But two is too many. Yeah. Two is too, too many. There should be zero,
Speaker 3 01:18:23 But they're complicated. Mm-hmm <affirmative> that's so interesting.
Speaker 0 01:18:27 All right. Well, thank you for joining us for Chuck. Carolyn, is there anything you would like to plug before we get outta here?
Speaker 3 01:18:34 Uh,
Speaker 0 01:18:35 I believe you have an Instagram about a certain dog.
Speaker 3 01:18:38 Oh yes, yes. I think I would. Yeah, I I'll plug. Uh, so we have a pup named Daisy sky and she has an Instagram named, uh, Daisy sky, the doodle mm-hmm <affirmative> where you can keep up on her antics and cuteness.
Speaker 0 01:18:53 Very nice.
Speaker 3 01:18:54 <laugh>
